Drammaturgia d'Amburgo: l'architettura del teatro per un circuito europeo

The study aims to investigate the destinies and vocations of Hamburg’s port area, with a focused look at the stretches of land along the southern bank of the Elbe River, which create an urban landscape defined by massive moving structures, cranes, gantries, and large ships in motion. The thesis seeks to develop a design response that is coherent with the context by examining the historical and cultural transformations that have bound the city’s urban fabric closely to the port’s presence, a driving force and economic heart of the city from its beginnings to the present day. In this perspective, it emphasizes the need to reimagine the urban frontage of the industrial area not solely as an economic engine but as a cultural engine—a “factory of culture” serving a community that extends into the European context. This vision is realized through a system of physical connections along waterways, forming the natural “infrastructure” that has historically supported exchanges, initially cultural and subsequently commercial. By establishing a land-based system intended for the mass production of traveling theaters, the urban frontage is redefined. Currently marked by developments that, in the last century, disrupted the formal and aesthetic unity once seen as an ideal extension of the city’s historic center, this area’s vocation is reinterpreted: a culture factory for a European theater.

L’elaborato ha l’intenzione di indagare i destini e le vocazioni dell’area portuale della città di Amburgo, con uno sguardo mirato a quei lembi di terra che si affacciano sulla sponda Sud del fiume Elba e che disegnano un prospetto urbano definito da enormi strutture mobili, gru, carroponti ed enormi navi in movimento. La tesi mira all’elaborazione di una risposta progettuale coerente con il contesto a partire dalla lettura delle trasformazioni storico-culturali che vedono il tessuto urbano strettamente legato alla presenza del porto, motore della città e cuore pulsante della sua economia dagli albori fino ad oggi. In quest’ottica si sottolinea la necessità di ripensare il fronte urbano dell’area produttiva non solo come motore commerciale, ma come motore culturale, una “fabbrica di cultura” a servizio della comunità allargata al contesto europeo, tramite un sistema di collegamenti fisici attraverso le vie d’acqua, che costituiscono la naturale “infrastruttura” che è storicamente stata al servizio degli scambi prima culturali, poi commerciali. Attraverso l’istituzione di un sistema di terra destinato alla produzione in serie di teatri itineranti viene ridisegnato il fronte urbano, oggi segnato dalle lottizzazioni che nello scorso secolo hanno contribuito a disintegrare quell’unità formale ed estetica che vedeva in questi contesti la prosecuzione ideale del centro storico della città, e ne viene reinterpretata la vocazione: una fabbrica di cultura per un teatro Europeo.
