A journey of light : a new place for the history of the light in Torre Gattoni

Over the centuries, from its Roman foundation to the present day, Como has undergone a continuous urban transformation, marked by the progressive dismantling of its original fortifications. What remains are fragments of the ancient city walls, including three emblematic towers that dominate the axis of Viale Cattaneo: Torre San Vitale, Porta Torre, and Torre Gattoni, the focus of this project. The history of Como and Torre Gattoni are deeply intertwined with the theme of light, which finds one of its most emblematic expressions in the Voltian celebrations that have marked the city, contributing to its urban and cultural transformation, leading to the creation of significant works such as the Monument to the Fallen, along with research into Enrico Prampolini’s early contributions and the influence of Sant’Elia’s ideas, culminating in the modern-day celebrations of light in the city of Como. The adaptive reuse project aims to emphasize the potential of Torre Gattoni, rethinking both the interior and surrounding spaces with a focus on enhancement and accessibility. It proposes an exhibition path inside the tower, dedicated to the history of light in Como. The experience begins with a gradual ascent to the top of the tower, culminating in a photographic exhibition on the ground floor that explores the use of light on materials by Como’s Rationalist masters: transparency, translucency, reflection, and opacity. These elements are central to the aesthetics and architectural innovation of the city, representing the connection between science, light, and architecture that has defined Como since the first Voltian exhibitions.

Nel corso dei secoli, dalla fondazione romana fino ai giorni nostri, Como ha vissuto un incessante processo di trasformazione urbana, caratterizzato da un progressivo smantellamento delle sue fortificazioni originarie, ciò che rimane sono frammenti delle antiche mura cittadine, tra cui tre torri emblematiche che dominano l'asse di viale Cattaneo: Torre San Vitale, Porta Torre e Torre Gattoni, oggetto del presente progetto. La storia di Como e della Torre Gattoni sono profondamente intrecciate con il tema della luce, che trova una delle sue manifestazioni più emblematiche nelle celebrazioni voltiane che hanno segnato la città, contribuendo alla sua trasformazione urbana e culturale, portando alla realizzazione di opere significative come il Monumento ai Caduti, con una ricerca sui contributi iniziali di Enrico Prampolini e l'influenza delle idee di Sant'Elia fino ad arrivare alle celebrazioni della luce dei giorni nostri nella città di Como. Il progetto di riuso intende enfatizzare le potenzialità della Torre Gattoni, ripensando gli spazi interni e circostanti in un'ottica di valorizzazione e accessibilità. Proponendo un percorso espositivo che si snoda all'interno della torre stessa, dedicato alla storia della luce a Como. L'esperienza espositiva inizia con una salita graduale verso la cima della torre, e si conclude con una mostra fotografica al piano terreno che esplora l'uso della luce sui materiali da parte dei maestri razionalisti comaschi: trasparenza, traslucenza, riflesso ed opacità. Elementi centrali nell'estetica e nell'innovazione architettonica della città, che rappresentano il connubio tra scienza, luce e architettura che ha caratterizzato Como sin dalle prime esposizioni voltiane.
