Factories and their surrounding infrastructure that emerged during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as a result of the Industrial Revolution often marked the beginnings of urbanization in many regions. Today, due to subsequent abandonment, these sites frequently remain as wastelands, prompting reflection on the challenges of their adaptation. This work aims to develop a comprehensive intervention strategy for one of such post-industrial sites, addressing urban-scale needs using the example of the former Metal Rolling Mill in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland. A key theme of the research is the concept of “peripherality” and its variability based on numerous factors, as well as its implications for architectural and urban design processes. Through an analysis of relevant reference interventions and exploration of architectural issues pertinent to the local context, this work aims to provide a foundation for the proposed design. Its result is an urban design strategy for transforming post-industrial areas and integrating them into the broader urban fabric leading to the final part – design for a housing estate within the area. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on adaptive reuse and proposes a model for developing effective strategies in similar contexts.

Abstract
This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on adaptive reuse and proposes a model for developing effective strategies in similar contexts.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
