Abstract
Nestled among the remnants of Milan’s ancient city walls, between the Darsena and Via Torino, the Sant’Eustorgio complex is enmeshed in the intricate web that history has woven over Milan, leaving its marks and traces crystallized in time. The church and cloisters tell a story that unfolds over the centuries, waiting for those who, amidst the chaos of contemporary Milan, take a moment to pause and listen. Located at the edge of the historic center, the basilica, along with the surrounding park, serves as a gateway to the heart of Milan, leading to the oldest neighborhoods where architecture, urban planning, and archaeology converge into a single discipline. Historical analysis reveals that the basilica of Sant’Eustorgio and its two cloisters were constructed in three distinct phases, as if placed along an ideal timeline that leads from the outskirts toward the center. It is precisely along this imagined timeline that this thesis project proposes a third “cloister” in continuity with the two existing ones. The new cloister emerges as a “fourth act” in the complex’s history, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the space. This semi-underground square space echoes the dimensions and proportions of the existing cloisters, reimagining the concept of arches: the iconic form of the arches is extruded, creating a modular concrete canopy. The proportions of the basilica complex have continuously inspired the design, establishing a profound and ongoing dialogue with the surrounding context. From the spacing of columns to the section of the intermediate wing between the two cloisters, forms and dimensions are woven into the project, creating a symbolic and visual connection to the past. This intervention not only adds a new chapter to a centuries-old story but also creates a bridge between the museum complex, with its rich historical layers, and the contemporary city, marked by the frenetic rhythms of the twenty-fi rst century. This intervention in this area of Milan is a journey through its history, an immersion in its urban tapestry. It is this very act of immersion that inspires the design of the park, whose layout is based on the layered traces of the area’s history—a sheet rewritten and erased multiple times, telling the architectural and historical stories of the neighborhood and the city. Within the park, a large ramp, like a fracture in the ground, allows visitors to descend to the level of the covered cloister and access the museum, bringing this immersion into the city’s layers to life before visitors embark on the museum’s path.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
