This thesis investigates the emergence of privately funded “favela-style” student housing model CPH Village project near Bispebjerg station in Copenhagen, Denmark. The study explores the socio-economic, environmental, and urban implications of CPH Village as a potential solution to Copenhagen’s housing crisis. Using a mixed-methods approach, including interviews, surveys, and observational fieldwork, this research addresses questions around affordability, quality of life, and ethical considerations in branding and community design. Results highlight significant tensions between affordability and quality, as well as ethical issues stemming from the commodifcation of poverty within capitalist frameworks. The findings also reveal that while CPH Village offers an innovative and sustainable approach to urban housing, it risks reinforcing social stratification and displacement effects in the local community. This case exemplifies broader challenges faced by urban policymakers and private developers aiming to balance economic viability with social responsibility. The thesis underscores the need for inclusive housing policies and re-evaluation of profit-oriented urban development models to ensure that sustainable and equitable urban futures are achievable.
