”The explosive growth of slums in the last decades, from Mexico City and other Latin American capitals through Africa to India, China, the Philippines and Indonesia, is perhaps the crucial geopolitical event of our times. … We are witnessing the rapid growth of a population outside the control of any state, mostly outside the law, in terrible need of minimal forms of self-organisation.” – S. Zizek, London Review of Books, 2004 While informal settlements may exhibit similar physical characteristics and face common difficulties globally, the demands and requirements that influence their surroundings are distinctly site-specific. Manila (the Capital of Philippines) is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with millions of residents living within its relatively small area. By now, this city is facing many environmental challenges and issues of inequalities in housing, education, jobs and health, all due to its continuous accelerating urban growth rate. Its informal settlements comprise around 40% of the population. Rehabilitation programs are currently in the planning stages, with Baseco compound identified as a key focal point for these efforts. This research presents a detailed examination of a specific community within Baseco, located in the Gasangan area, seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of its configuration, social dynamics, and role with the urban context, in the hope of contributing to Baseco’s future development through gradual interventions. Linking formal and informal settlements by approaching the slum in an integrated manner, the study plan to improve the network (both social and urban) that shapes Baseco. The latter will not be perceived as an hindrance to regeneration but as the key trait that can provide perspectives for the development of innovative and more effective methods to address this complex and vulnerable urban situation.

Abstract
The latter will not be perceived as an hindrance to regeneration but as the key trait that can provide perspectives for the development of innovative and more effective methods to address this complex and vulnerable urban situation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
