The research thesis investigates the production of Greek architect and urban planner Constantinos A. Doxiadis (1913-1975)’ international architectural journal ‘Ekistics’, ran under the editorship of Jaqueline Tyrwhitt (1905-1983), during a period of 20 years from its inception in 1955 until Doxiadis’ death in 1975. ‘Ekistics’ is positioned within the specific context of post-war globalisation in planning knowledge exchange, in the intersection between local and global frames of reference. On a global level, the pedagogical mission of ‘Ekistics’ is understood amidst an overall Cold-war diplomatic climate, in which the foreign policies of American foundations and supranational organisations for the implementation of Western consultancy in developing regions produces the conditions for an overall valorisation of technical expertise. On a local level, ‘Ekistics’ is weighed in its reception within the turbulent cultural and political climate in the aftermath of the Greek Civil War. Through the use of archival documentation, the operation of the journal is used as a vehicle to cartograph the modes of transnational association, professional networking and geopolitical affiliation behind its production, operation and distribution. In doing so, the research seeks to contribute to a wider re-evaluation on the role of the architectural periodical as apparatus for a broadening of the scope, from a perspective of single authorships to a reading of historiography through networked modes of interrelations. In this effort, questions regarding the visual branding, identity, promotion and circulation of ‘Ekistics’ are being addressed. Finally, the total networking effect of Ekistics is examined and represented as the superimposition of various overlapping professional and organisational networks with different geographic distributions – behind its operation and management, behind its editorship and intellectual consultancy as well as behind its readership and international correspondence.

Abstract
Finally, the total networking effect of Ekistics is examined and represented as the superimposition of various overlapping professional and organisational networks with different geographic distributions – behind its operation and management, behind its editorship and intellectual consultancy as well as behind its readership and international correspondence.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
