Reconstruction in Ukraine : socio-cultural center for youth in Irpin

In February 2022, Irpin was attacked by the Russian army, and its residents destroyed their own bridge to prevent access to Kyiv, at the cost of physical and human destruction. The challenge of revitalizing a city wounded by the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has been addressed through a project aimed at integrating with the city’s characteristics, providing a way for it to rebuild itself socially as well. Starting from an analysis of the city and inspired by a French concept that embodies values of solidarity, community, education, and culture—namely, the Maison de la Jeunesse et de la Culture—the objective was to create a center that would allow the city’s youth to find a place to refer to and grow. Beyond the importance of educating young people, the goal was also to breathe new life into the devastated city by adding functions to the spaces that are open to the entire community. Both in the functions of the center itself and in its design, the spirit of the project remains one of unity for the city, drawing inspiration from its urban layouts, which served as the starting point for the volumes that are situated and integrated into a wooded area of Irpin. The project aims to serve as a connection between the city center and the northern areas, which have a more tourist-oriented and recreational character. It also acts as a mediator in relation to the existing building density through the synthesis of two different construction approaches: more massive and defined volumes for collective functions, and smaller, more distributed units for educational functions. All these elements give life to the heart of the project: the walkway, which aims to be the connecting element between an urban connection project and the building itself. It originates in the heart of the center and continues into the woods, creating a social and cultural pathway. This thesis aims to describe the various phases of the project, from architectural, structural, and technological design to energy feasibility, ergonomics, and the analysis of the building’s life cycle.

A febbraio 2022, Irpin viene assalita dall’esercito russo e i suoi abitanti distruggono il proprio ponte per impedire l’accesso a Kyiv, al costo di distruzioni a livello fisico e umano significativo. La sfida di ricostruire in una città ferita dalla guerra, ancora in corso, tra l’Ucraina e la Russia è stata affrontata con un progetto che cerca di integrarsi nelle caratteristiche della città, fornendo un nuovo dinamismo per ricostruirsi anche socialmente. Partendo da un’analisi della città e ispirandosi a un concetto francese che promuove valori di solidarietà, comunità, educazione e cultura, ovvero le Maison de la Jeunesse et de la Culture, l’obiettivo è stato quello di creare un centro che permettesse ai giovani della città di trovare un luogo cui riferirsi e crescere. Oltre all’importanza data all’educazione dei giovani, lo scopo è stato anche quello di dare un nuovo soffio alla città distrutta, aggiungendo alle funzioni didattiche degli spazi anche aperti all’intera comunità. Sia nelle funzioni del centro stesso, sia nella sua progettazione, lo spirito del progetto rimane quello di un’unità della città, ispirandosi alle sue giaciture urbane, che sono state il punto di partenza dei volumi che si collocano e si infiltrano in un’area boschiva di Irpin. Il progetto si propone come connessione tra il centro della città e le aree a nord, a vocazione più turistica e ludica. Si pone come mediatore anche rispetto alla densità costruttiva esistente attraverso la sintesi di due diverse modalità costruttive: volumi più massivi e definiti per le funzioni collettive e unità più minute e distribuite per quelle didattiche. Tutti questi elementi danno vita al cuore del progetto: la passerella, che si vuole l’elemento di connessione tra un progetto di collegamento urbano e l’edificio. Essa nasce nel cuore del centro per continuare nel bosco, creando un percorso sociale e culturale. Questa tesi si propone di descrivere le varie fasi nel progetto dalla fase di progettazione architettonica, strutturale e tecnologica fino alla fattibilità energetica, ergotecnica e alla all’analisi del ciclo di vita dell’edificio.
