Cross-border mobility is a cornerstone of European integration, offering significant economic, social, and environmental benefits while advancing sustainable transportation goals. In Europe, cross-border passenger rail connections enhance trade, tourism, and cultural exchange and bridge geographical and economic differences between member states. Despite the European Union’s emphasis on these services as vital contributors to integration, cross-border long-distance passenger services face many challenges, in particular, technical and operational barriers that limit their potential. This study investigates these barriers, focusing on the interplay between spatial characteristics and barrier effects of border, which influence service demand and functionality. Through a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative analyses, the research explores how territorial dimensions and geographical limitations influence passenger preferences, impacting the attractiveness and reliability of cross-border rail services. Furthermore, it evaluates the transformative potential of a competitive market landscape by minimizing these barriers and emphasizes the importance of improving service quality and strategic market planning to enhance the accessibility and appeal of cross-border rail. The study underlines the competitive landscape, highlighting the need for understanding market dynamics and innovative solutions to unlock the full potential of cross-border long-distance passenger rail as a driver of European integration and sustainable mobility.
La mobilità transfrontaliera è una pietra miliare dell'integrazione europea, che offre significativi benefici economici, sociali e ambientali, promuovendo al contempo obiettivi di trasporto sostenibile. In Europa, i collegamenti ferroviari transfrontalieri per passeggeri migliorano il commercio, il turismo e gli scambi culturali e colmano le differenze geografiche ed economiche tra gli stati membri. Nonostante l'enfasi dell'Unione Europea su questi servizi come fattori essenziali per l'integrazione, i passeggeri dei servizi transfrontalieri a lunga percorrenza affrontano molte sfide, in particolare barriere tecniche e operative che ne limitano il potenziale. Questo studio esamina queste barriere, concentrandosi sull'interazione tra caratteristiche spaziali ed effetti barriera del confine, che influenzano la domanda e la funzionalità del servizio. Attraverso un approccio misto che combina analisi qualitative e quantitative, la ricerca esplora come la dimensione territoriale e le limitazioni geografiche influenzano le preferenze dei passeggeri, influenzando l'attrattiva e l'affidabilità dei servizi ferroviari transfrontalieri. Inoltre, la ricerca valuta il potenziale trasformativo di un panorama di mercato competitivo riducendo al minimo queste barriere e sottolinea l'importanza di migliorare la qualità del servizio e la pianificazione strategica del mercato per migliorare l'accessibilità e l'attrattiva della ferrovia transfrontaliera. Lo studio mette in luce il panorama competitivo, evidenziando la necessità di comprendere le dinamiche di mercato e di trovare soluzioni innovative per sfruttare appieno il potenziale del trasporto ferroviario transfrontaliero di passeggeri a lunga percorrenza come motore dell'integrazione europea e della mobilità sostenibile.
