From white gold to rocky landscapes : innovative trends for Apennine Resorts

The research thesis focuses on ski resorts located at the Italian Apennines and how the landscape and living scenarios are changing due to climate change. These resorts have a significant impact on the mountain landscape and its economy. Historically, in similar geographic regions throughout the world, actitivities, population centers and holiday centers have grown around ski resorts, testifying to a period of progress, growth and optimism. Nowdays, the situation is reversing. The entire Italian territory is at the center of an area considered a “hot spot” of climate change but most existing research primarily focus on the Alps. This academic paper intends to classify the existing infrastructure along the Apennines with the purpose of reflecting on the need to explore new landscapes to determine more sustainable future environmental uses and balances, finding strategies involving a mix of reconversion, extension or abandonment of some structures, and considering new investments to strengthen and improve the mountain ski areas with greater potential.

La tesi di ricerca si concentra sulle stazioni sciistiche situate sull'Appennino italiano e su come il paesaggio e gli scenari di vita stanno cambiando a causa dei cambiamenti climatici. Queste località hanno un impatto significativo sul paesaggio montano e sulla sua economia. Storicamente, in regioni geografiche simili in tutto il mondo, attività, centri abitati e centri di vacanza sono cresciuti attorno alle stazioni sciistiche, testimoniando un periodo di progresso, crescita e ottimismo. Oggi la situazione si è invertita. L’intero territorio italiano è al centro di un’area considerata un “punto caldo” del cambiamento climatico ma la maggior parte delle ricerche esistenti si concentra principalmente sulle Alpi. Il presente contributo accademico intende classificare le infrastrutture esistenti lungo l’Appennino con l’obiettivo di riflettere sulla necessità di esplorare nuovi paesaggi per determinare usi ed equilibri ambientali futuri più sostenibili, individuando strategie che prevedano un mix di riconversione, ampliamento o abbandono di alcune strutture, e valutare nuovi investimenti per potenziare e migliorare i comprensori sciistici montani a maggior potenziale.
