Prishtina's Civic City Center : Prishtina case study: Opera and Ballet Theatre

This thesis focuses on the revitalization and completion of Prishtina’s Civic City Center, drawing on the unfinished 1967 masterplan by architect Ljiljana Babić. The masterplan, which sought to define the city’s urban core, was never fully implemented, leaving Prishtina with a fragmented center. The study aims to bridge this gap by reimagining Babić’s original vision in the context of modern urban needs. Through a detailed analysis of Prishtina’s urban development during the Socialist period, the research examines the original planning concepts and the socio-political factors that shaped them. It then assesses the current state of the city center, identifying existing challenges and opportunities. Additionally, the thesis considers future municipal development plans, aiming to integrate them with the historical masterplan. The findings suggest that by integrating past, present, and future perspectives, it is possible to create a cohesive and functional civic center that honors Prishtina’s urban heritage while meeting contemporary needs.

Questa tesi si concentra sulla rivitalizzazione e il completamento del Civic City Center di Pristina, attingendo al masterplan incompiuto del 1967 dell'architetto Ljiljana Babić. Il masterplan, che cercava di definire il nucleo urbano della città, non è mai stato completamente implementato, lasciando Pristina con un centro frammentato. Lo studio mira a colmare questa lacuna reimmaginando la visione originale di Babić nel contesto delle moderne esigenze urbane. Attraverso un'analisi dettagliata dello sviluppo urbano di Pristina durante il periodo socialista, la ricerca esamina i concetti di pianificazione originali e i fattori socio-politici che li hanno plasmati. Quindi valuta lo stato attuale del centro città, identificando le sfide e le opportunità esistenti. Inoltre, la tesi considera i futuri piani di sviluppo municipale, mirando a integrarli con il masterplan storico. I risultati suggeriscono che integrando prospettive passate, presenti e future, è possibile creare un centro civico coeso e funzionale che onori il patrimonio urbano di Pristina soddisfacendo al contempo le esigenze contemporanee.
