This thesis explores the potential of the architectural theories of Alison and Peter Smithson, particularly their concepts of “Cluster City” and “The Space Between,” for solving contemporary urban issues in Chinese industrial cities, using Shenyang as a case study. The research analyzed the rapid urbanization and deindustrialization of Shenyang and London, which changed the social structure and led to urban issues such as gentrification, social indifference, and loss of community identity. Through a critical examination and reflection of the Smithsons theories and projects in its European historical context, this study identifies the relevance of their concept for fostering sustainable and inclusive urban development. The research aims to critically interpret the concept into a design project, through the study of the Smithsons concepts. The design proposal focuses on the transformation of neglected urban areas into dynamic and inclusive communities that promote sustainable urban development. This thesis concludes that an approach that combines the Smithsons’ ideas with significant local adaptability can provide strategic insights into the revitalization of the urban environment in Shenyang and Chinese industrial cities with similar characteristics.

Abstract
This thesis concludes that an approach that combines the Smithsons’ ideas with significant local adaptability can provide strategic insights into the revitalization of the urban environment in Shenyang and Chinese industrial cities with similar characteristics.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
