This thesis investigates innovative service design tailored to solo travellers in the cruise tourism industry, a growing demographic that values a blend of independence and social connection. Recognising the specific needs of solo travellers, this research identifies service gaps and proposes solutions that balance affordability, community, safety, and personalisation. The study highlights solo travellers motivations, emphasising their desire for flexible, personalised experiences, security, and opportunities for meaningful social interactions. Using user-centered design (UCD) principles, this research explores how thoughtful service design and technological advancements can enhance the solo travel experience on cruises. Key solutions proposed include dormitory-style pods for budget-conscious travellers, communal kitchens that offer affordable dining options and foster social connections, and eco-tracking cabins to promote sustainability and reward eco-friendly behaviour. Digital tools, such as the “Meet on Board” app, are also recommended to facilitate real-time social networking, event planning, and connections based on shared interests. Automated recycling systems encourage responsible waste management and reinforce the cruise line’s commitment to environmental responsibility. A mixed-method approach, including ethnographic observation, surveys, and interviews with solo travellers, informs this study’s findings on service expectations. This research draws on theoretical models such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and Customer Experience (CX) frameworks to develop a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing satisfaction and loyalty among solo travellers. The study is further enriched by insights from Giuseppe Carmosino’s PhD research on shifting demographics in cruise tourism. The findings underscore the need for a holistic approach to service design, combining customisation, sustainability, and user-centricity. By meeting solo travellers expectations for both independence and connection, these innovative services can significantly enhance client satisfaction, drive repeat business, and strengthen the cruise industry’s appeal to the solo travel market.
