This thesis examines the relational dynamics of knowledge management in university-industry (U-I) collaborations within the design studio labs of Politecnico di Milano. The study focuses on how the relationships contribute to the innovation development by facilitating structured knowledge exchanges between academia and industry. Specifically, the thesis explores the mechanisms of knowledge exploration for companies which become essential also for collaborative projects in design, where innovative solutions emerge from university knowledge domain. New paradigm of open innovation and its principles provide the conceptual background, illustrating how external knowledge can complement internal resources to enrich the latest design-driven NPD processes. Knowledge management and a specific capacity - i.e. absorptive capacity - are then applied to understand how design labs can effectively allow company to explore external inputs, adapting them to suit the creative and technical demands of innovative design projects. The research identifies key challenges to U-I collaborations, including cultural and operational disparities, and proposes strategies to navigate these, emphasizing the importance of a shared language and mutual agreements. Through an in-depth case study of the Politecnico’s design labs, the thesis illustrates practical applications of knowledge management relational strategies tailored to this specific design context. Finally, the findings provide a practical framework for managing U-I collaborations specifically within design education. This framework highlights how strategies and boundary objects in design labs can bridge institutional and operational divides, offering a model for other educational institutions aiming to strengthen industry partnerships.
Questa tesi esamina le dinamiche relazionali nella gestione della conoscenza (knowledge management) nelle collaborazioni tra università e industria (U-I) all’interno dei laboratori di design del Politecnico di Milano. Lo studio si concentra su come tali relazioni contribuiscano allo sviluppo dell’innovazione, facilitando scambi di conoscenza strutturati tra il mondo accademico e quello industriale. In particolare, la tesi approfondisce i meccanismi di esplorazione della conoscenza (knowledge exploration) per le aziende, che diventano fondamentali anche per i progetti collaborativi nell’ ambito del design, dove soluzioni innovative emergono dal dominio conoscitivo universitario. I nuovi paradigmi dell’open innovation e i suoi principi forniscono il contesto concettuale, illustrando come la conoscenza esterna possa integrare le risorse interne, arricchendo i più recenti processi di sviluppo prodotto (NPD) basati sulla teoria del design. La gestione della conoscenza e una specifica capacità - l’absorptive capacity - vengono quindi applicate per comprendere come i laboratori di design possano efficacemente permettere alle aziende di esplorare input esterni, adattandoli alle esigenze creative e tecniche dei progetti di design innovativi. La ricerca identifica le principali sfide delle collaborazioni U-I, inclusi i divari culturali e operativi, e propone strategie per affrontarle, sottolineando l’importanza di un linguaggio comune e di accordi reciproci all’interno delle partnership. Attraverso uno studio di caso approfondito sui laboratori di design del Politecnico, la tesi illustra applicazioni pratiche circa le strategie relazionali di gestione della conoscenza adattate a questo specifico contesto di design. Infine, i risultati forniscono un quadro pratico per la gestione delle collaborazioni U-I, specificamente nell’educazione al design. Questo quadro evidenzia come strategie e “boundary objects” nei laboratori di design possano colmare le divisioni istituzionali e operative, offrendo un modello per altre istituzioni educative che mirano a rafforzare le partnership con l’industria.
