Across the Mediterranean, saltpans have long shaped both landscapes and livelihoods, blending industry with ecology. These reflective, ever-changing surfaces serve as critical habitats, offering sanctuary to migratory birds journeying between Africa and Europe. Yet, as many saltworks fall into disuse, they enter a phase of transformation—where nature reclaims space, water levels shift, and past and present intertwine. The project Saltpan Reimagined embraces this transitional moment, reimagining decommissioned saline landscapes not as relics, but as evolving ecologies where history, biodiversity, and cultural memory converge. Situated in the Molentargius saltpans of Sardinia, this project explores the delicate interplay between human intervention and natural adaptation. Once a thriving saltworks in the heart of Cagliari, the site now stands at the crossroads of memory and renewal. Shaped by the rhythms of water, wind, and salt, it tells a story of industry’s imprint and nature’s quiet resilience. As salt production faded, new life emerged—brackish lagoons, shifting habitats, and the graceful passage of migratory birds that now find refuge in these saline expanses. Our project is a site-sensitive restoration one that prioritizes the protection and revitalization of these fragile ecosystems. Through minimal intervention, the project ensures that the site's geomorphology, microclimate, and cultural residues are not erased but reactivated through strategic spatial and ecological enhancements. Rather than imposing change, it listens to the whispers of salt—to the shifting water levels, the crystallization of salt, the flight paths of birds—allowing these natural rhythms to guide a restoration process that harmonizes past legacies with contemporary ecological imperatives. By integrating adaptive reuse and regenerative design strategies, the project cultivates an environment where past and present coexist. It restores wetland habitats, supports avian biodiversity, and reinterprets historical structures and pathways, offering visitors an opportunity for quiet observation and reflection. In doing so, Saltpan Reimagined becomes a landscape of renewal—where salt, birds, and people continue to shape its story, ensuring that the whispers of the past endure within the ever-changing coastal environment.

Abstract
In doing so, Saltpan Reimagined becomes a landscape of renewal—where salt, birds, and people continue to shape its story, ensuring that the whispers of the past endure within the ever-changing coastal environment.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
