Reflecting on the potential role of exhibition culture in the enhancement of built heritage: a travelling pavilion for a neglected chapter in the history of Turkish Architecture

The aim of this thesis is to develop a critical reflection on the notion of built heritage, and at investigating the effectiveness of the exhibition practice in enhancing its acknowledgment, preservation, and promotion. This topic was approached by studying a specific case, that of the Late Modern Architecture that developed after 1970 in Turkey; today the buildings produced in this period are in danger of extinction due to rapid urbanization, rent-oriented policies, and lack of conservation awareness. By investigating this phenomenon and its values, and thus validating the recognition of these constructions as built heritage, the thesis exemplifies how to promote this knowledge through a travelling exhibition set up in a travelling pavilion.

L'obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di sviluppare una riflessione critica sulla nozione di patrimonio edilizio e di indagare l'efficacia della pratica espositiva nel migliorarne il riconoscimento, la conservazione e la promozione. L'argomento è stato affrontato studiando un caso specifico, quello dell'architettura tardo-moderna sviluppatasi dopo il 1970 in Turchia; oggi gli edifici prodotti in questo periodo sono in pericolo di estinzione a causa della rapida urbanizzazione, delle politiche orientate all'affitto e della mancanza di consapevolezza della conservazione. Indagando questo fenomeno e i suoi valori, e convalidando così il riconoscimento di queste costruzioni come patrimonio edilizio, la tesi esemplifica come promuovere questa conoscenza attraverso una mostra itinerante allestita in un padiglione itinerante.
