Il sito dei Musei Vaticani: una proposta di redesign usabile e accessibile

The thesis analyzes the role of museum websites in the contemporary digital era, focusing on the importance of designing usable and accessible web interfaces to promote, enhance, and make available to everyone the cultural heritage and the artifacts they preserve. Specifically, the thesis examines the case study of the Vatican Museums’ website, one of the most historically significant museum institutions and the second most visited museum in the world in 2023. The objective of this study is to assess the main issues of the museum’s website and subsequently propose a redesign project to improve its usability and accessibility. The initial part of the thesis includes a review of existing literature, emphasizing the central role of the website as a multifunctional tool for museums. Following this, the study evaluates the usability and accessibility of the Vatican Museums’ website using specific tools and by exploring similar institutions. Additionally, personas and their corresponding empathy maps were created to identify the most common user navigation behaviors. The final redesign project proposes an updated information architecture, a new UI Kit, significant usability improvements, and several implementations to enhance accessibility, offering a solution that could serve as an inspiration for the future.

La tesi analizza il ruolo dei siti web museali nell’era digitale contemporanea, concentrandosi sull’importanza di progettare interfacce web usabili e accessibili, affinché siano in grado di promuovere, valorizzare e rendere fruibile a tutti il patrimonio culturale e i beni che custodiscono. Nello specifico, viene preso in considerazione il caso studio del sito web dei Musei Vaticani, una delle realtà museali storicamente più rilevanti, nonché il secondo museo più visitato al mondo nel 2023. L’elaborato ha l’obiettivo di esaminare le principali problematiche del sito museale, proponendo successivamente un progetto di re-design che ne va a migliorare l’usabilità e l’accessibilità. Nella parte iniziale della tesi è stata condotta un’analisi della letteratura esistente, che pone l’attenzione sul ruolo di centralità del sito web come strumento multifunzionale per i musei. In seguito, lo studio va a fare una valutazione dell’usabilità e accessibilità del sito dei Musei Vaticani, utilizzando strumenti specifici e andando ad esplorare altre realtà simili. Sono state create anche delle personas con le relative empathy maps, utili ad individuare le azioni di navigazione più comuni tra gli utenti. Il progetto di redesign finale propone un'architettura dell'informazione aggiornata, un nuovo UI Kit, dei miglioramenti significativi sull’usabilità e qualche implementazione che ne migliora l’accessibilità, con una proposta che possa essere d’ispirazione per il futuro.
