This thesis addresses the imperative for advanced economies to redefine the current innovation paradigm, bridging the gap between sustainability initiatives and business practices. Although today’s innovation models have driven significant economic and technological advancements, they remain resource-intensive and predominantly focused on short-term profit. This approach fails to address global sustainability challenges and, in many cases, exacerbates them, leading to social inequality and environmental degradation. Building on Frugal Innovation (FI), which originated in resource-constrained markets, this thesis seeks to harness its sustainable potential and position it as foundation for the innovation paradigm of the future. To achieve this, the study introduces the Advanced Frugal Sustainable Innovation (AFSI) framework, which systematically aligns FI with the pursuit of sustainable development. The research is guided by two key questions: (1) How can the theoretical principles of FI be integrated to clarify its contribution to sustainable development in advanced economies? and (2) How can the multidimensional aspects of the reconceptualized FI be effectively integrated into the innovation processes of MNCs? To address these research questions, a Systematic Literature Review and Qualitative Content Analysis were conducted to establish the theoretical foundation of the AFSI framework. Subsequently, an in-depth single-case study of a European multinational in the HVACR sector was carried out to provide practical recommendations for implementing the model. This thesis contributes both theoretically and practically to the field of innovation and sustainability. It advances the understanding of FI, particularly by exploring its role in fostering long-term environmental and social sustainability in advanced economies. Meanwhile, it offers an actionable framework that multinational corporations and policymakers can leverage to drive systemic change, balancing economic performance with sustainable development objectives.

Abstract
Meanwhile, it offers an actionable framework that multinational corporations and policymakers can leverage to drive systemic change, balancing economic performance with sustainable development objectives.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
