This thesis proposes a reinterpretation of muqarnas, a traditional element found in Turkish architecture, to adapt its form and function for contemporary design applications. The study begins with an overview of material culture in the architectural history of Turkey. It emphasizes the role of stone as an important material and its use in significant architectural elements, including muqarnas. Muqarnas, that are mostly constructed with stone, are known for their intricate geometry, decorative appeal, and practical contributions to spatial acoustics. The study explores the possibility of improving muqarnas’ acoustic properties using innovative design strategies. It proposes a sustainable reinterpretation of muqarnas by incorporating contemporary materials such as acoustic textiles and employing design for disassembly principles. This approach ensures that the new design can be efficiently assembled, disassembled, and recycled and minimizes environmental impact. The theoretical framework is complemented by a practical application. A temporary installation design inspired by muqarnas is proposed. This installation draws inspiration from a traditional element, integrates improved acoustic performance and sustainable design techniques to present a contemporary reinterpretation of this architectural element.
Questa tesi propone una reinterpretazione dei muqarnas, un elemento tradizionale dell’architettura turca, per adattarne la forma e la funzione alle applicazioni del design contemporaneo. Lo studio inizia con una panoramica della cultura materiale nella storia architettonica della Turchia, evidenziando il ruolo della pietra come materiale fondamentale e il suo impiego in elementi architettonici significativi. Generalmente realizzati in pietra, i muqarnas sono noti per la loro complessa geometria, il valore decorativo e il contributo pratico all’acustica degli spazi. La ricerca esplora la possibilità di migliorare le proprietà acustiche dei muqarnas attraverso strategie progettuali innovative. Si propone una reinterpretazione sostenibile di questo elemento architettonico, integrando materiali contemporanei come tessuti acustici e adottando principi di design for disassembly. Questo approccio garantisce che il nuovo design possa essere assemblato, smontato e riciclato in modo efficiente, riducendo al minimo l’impatto ambientale. Il quadro teorico è completato da un’applicazione pratica: viene proposto il progetto di un’installazione temporanea ispirata ai muqarnas. Questa installazione trae ispirazione da un elemento tradizionale, integrando prestazioni acustiche migliorate e tecniche di design sostenibile per offrire una reinterpretazione contemporanea di questo elemento architettonico.
