The research theme explored in this thesis intertwines project’s scales and construction sites, contiguous but not homogeneous, vast but not indifferent. It connects the scale of the landscape, the Venetian lagoon with its system of emerged lands that form an archipelago, with the one of the city, Venice, with its morphological density and “campi” as openings and civic spaces, and, at last, with the one of architecture, which derives both from the confrontation and overlooking of the sea, as well as from the continuity between open space and built space. The place, Poveglia, an island in the archipelago, becomes the study case par excellence to understand how profound the osmosis between land and water is. Its built structure highlights assonances and variations with the city of Venice, but it always derives its generative canons from an idea of an island, not as a finite and self-enclosed element, but as a pole of a terraqueous system. This system, in constant evolution, considers the water, the Adriatic Sea, and the earth, the islands of the archipelago, as a continuous and stratified network capable of constituting an unicum, a palimpsest, that, once studied and “read,” shows back rules and variations to be applied in order to maintain and preserve that same landscape and urban system, through the “writing” of new episodes. The thesis project proposes itself to redevelop the island of Poveglia, a place that, over the centuries, has won a historical importance due to the functions it has served and its strategic geographical location. Today, however, Poveglia is in a state of abandonment and decay, remaining uninhabited. The intervention not only intends to recover the island’s historical and cultural value but also to restore its connection with the Venetian archipelago, giving back to the insular context a new role in the territorial system. The idea is showing that it is possible to build innovation within tradition, as a layer of added meaning to a millennia-old history, without losing its memory and its reasons of being.

Abstract
The idea is showing that it is possible to build innovation within tradition, as a layer of added meaning to a millennia-old history, without losing its memory and its reasons of being.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
