Ri-abitare macerie e memorie. Coltivare senza dimenticare il passato: mercato ed orti per il territorio e la comunità di Accumoli

"Re-living rubble and memories” explores the delicate dialogue and the research for balance between conservation of historical heritage and the need for architectural redevelopment. Understanding what remains is essential for interpreting and designing a project in a fragile contexts, especially if they have been destroyed. The identity of the places evolves together with the people who is living there, while memory offers a narrative of the past and the territory. Starting from the example of nature that has regained its space among the debris, we choose to dialogue with the history of the village of Accumoli and with the memory that is still breathing in the rubble, memory of the earthquake that hit central Italy in 2016, but also a testimony of what was there before, in an attempt to create new social relationships and return the identity of a community that in these places was gradually lost. The project has as its primary objective the respect for the memory of the past, but at the same time the restitution of an everyday life and a sense of community now destroyed. Therefore, it’s essential to listen and dialogue with the inhabitants to understand the needs for the definition of a project that is the real and concrete response to theirs needs. In a village like Accumoli, now isolated with a small and disintegrated community, these concepts are translated into the design of spaces emblem of an idea of everyday life and relationships: market and vegetable garets for the territory and the community. The first represents the space of meeting and exchange for excellence, the second rapresents the idea of interaction and sharing, as well as simplicity and tradition. From an architectural point of view, the intervention is integrated with pre-existing conditions, seeking constant respect for rubble, adopting contemporary and recognisable solutions that are not destructive but maintain a dialogue, integrating with what remains. All in all, the will is to design without erasing the remains of the earthquake but to re-equalify them, to rebuild a sense of community and synergy, starting from the activities of tradition and daily life.

"Ri-abitare macerie e memorie” esplora il delicato dialogo e la ricerca di equilibrio tra conservazione del patrimonio storico e necessità di riqualificazione architettonica. La comprensione di ciò che resta è fondamentale per interpretare e progettare in contesti fragili, soprattutto se andati distrutti. L’identità dei luoghi evolve insieme a quella degli abitanti, mentre la memoria offre una narrazione del passato e del territorio. A partire dall’esempio della natura che si è ripresa il suo spazio fra i detriti, si sceglie di dialogare con la storia del borgo di Accumoli e con la memoria che nelle macerie ancora si respira, ricordo del sisma che ha colpito il centro Italia nel 2016, ma anche testimonianza di ciò che vi era in precedenza, nel tentativo di creare relazioni sociali nuove e restituire l’identità di una comunità che in questi luoghi si è via via persa. Il progetto si pone come obiettivo primario il rispetto per la memoria del passato, ma al contempo la restituzione di una quotidianità e di un senso di collettività ormai distrutti. Quindi, risulta fondamentale l’ascolto e il dialogo con gli abitanti stessi per comprendere le necessità per la definizione di un progetto che sia la risposta reale e concreta a queste esigenze. In un borgo come quello di Accumoli, ad oggi isolato e abitato da una comunità piccola e disgregata, questi concetti vengono tradotti nella progettazione di spazi emblematici dell’idea di quotidianità e di relazioni: mercato e orti per il territorio e la comunità. Il primo rappresenta lo spazio di incontro e scambio per eccellenza mentre il secondo l’idea di interazione e condivisione, oltre che di semplicità e tradizione. Da un punto di vista architettonico, l’intervento si integra con le preesistenze, ricercando il costante rispetto per le macerie, adottando soluzioni contemporanee e riconoscibili che non siano distruttive ma mantengano un dialogo, integrandosi con ciò che rimane. La volontà resta, quindi, quella di progettare senza cancellare i resti del sisma ma riqualificandoli, per ricostruire un senso di comunità e sinergia, a partire dalle attività della tradizione e della vita quotidiana.
