The research work of this thesis aims to decipher Yuval Avital's multifaceted identity and artistic journey by unraveling the latent meanings of his works beyond their phenomenal manifestation, bringing to bear an analysis conducted firsthand over the course of six months spent at Avital's studio. Through semiotic analysis, a discipline not foreign to the artist's context, it was intended to explore the seemingly formless web of meanings, values and worlds that underlie his works. The semiotic approach is proposed as a method for tracing the recurring iconographies and symbols in the artist's production, highlighting the connections between the different forms of expression he explored - music, visual arts, performance and installations - and their contribution aimed at a total work of art, or Gesamtkustwerk (Velani & Venturi, 2023). This concept, employed by Avital himself to describe his varied artistic production, far from being a simple juxtaposition of languages, appears as an expressive synthesis aimed at engaging the audience in an immersive, multisensory narrative. Inspired by Eco's (1979) concepts of interpreter and encyclopedia, the thesis aims to bridge the gap between the artist and the audience, providing the latter with the tools to assimilate and interpret Avital's artistic universe. Following McLuhan's (1964/1995) idea that the medium directly influences content and communicative experience, we explore how Avital uses expressive media as bearers of meaning, in an intersemiotic dialogue between the arts, aimed at eliciting specific effects of meaning. Through the connections between symbols, icons and themes within a narrative map, the thesis does not limit its research to cataloging Avital's artistic work, but highlights the “why” and “how,” allowing the user to identify the will and poetics behind each work analyzed. Ultimately, the thesis breaks down Avital's work and then recomposes it into a narrative structured from recurring iconographies. The graphical restitution of this narrative is translated into an immersive platform, integrated into the artist's website, inspired by the concept of the rhizome (Deleuze & Guattari, 1980): a non-hierarchical and ever-expanding structure that represents the works as an interconnected and dynamic whole. Such a web appendix not only enhances the interdisciplinary nature of Avital's work, but also allows the public to explore its overall meaning and interpretive potential, offering an immersive, multilevel viewing experience.

Abstract
Such a web appendix not only enhances the interdisciplinary nature of Avital's work, but also allows the public to explore its overall meaning and interpretive potential, offering an immersive, multilevel viewing experience.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
