Rethinking tradition: project for the Museum Archive of the marble workers’ workshop of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano

The thesis project proposed for the Musocco Cantiere Marmisti in Milan is organized through the Museum Archive, which is intended to preserve and enhance the sculptures of the Duomo. This centre is not limited to the mere physical preservation of works, but has the ambitious goal of feeding a living heritage of craftsmanship knowledge, establishing a fruitful dialogue between historical and contemporary practices. Conceived as a cultural ecosystem, the project integrates museum, laboratory and archive, offering a dynamic environment that promotes interaction and learning for both the community and specialists. One of its strengths is the ability to engage the public in the many challenges of conservation, Transforming this activity into an educational experience that combines aesthetic appreciation with awareness of the essential value of heritage protection. Through interactive and accessible spaces, the center aims to transmit traditional techniques to new generations, reaffirming the importance of artistic preservation in collective culture. In addition, the project aims to become a new cultural hub for the city of Milan, contributing to the redevelopment of the Musocco district and reaffirming the central role of crafts in defining urban identity. Through a harmonious integration between historical methodologies and contemporary technologies, this space will pay homage to the rich heritage of Milan, combining with balance conservative demands and present needs.

Il progetto di tesi proposto per il Cantiere Marmisti di Musocco a è organizzato attraverso l'Archivio dei Musei, che ha lo scopo di preservare e valorizzare le sculture del Duomo. Questo centro non si limita alla mera conservazione fisica delle opere, ma ha l'ambizioso obiettivo di alimentare un patrimonio vivente di conoscenza artigianale, stabilendo un dialogo fecondo tra pratiche storiche e contemporanee. Concepito come un ecosistema culturale, il progetto integra museo, laboratorio e archivio, offrendo un ambiente dinamico che promuove l'interazione e l'apprendimento sia per la comunità che per gli specialisti. Uno dei suoi punti di forza è la capacità di coinvolgere il pubblico nelle numerose sfide della conservazione, trasformando questa attività in un'esperienza educativa che combina l'apprezzamento estetico con la consapevolezza del valore essenziale della protezione del patrimonio. Attraverso spazi interattivi e accessibili, il centro mira a trasmettere le tecniche tradizionali alle nuove generazioni, ribadendo l'importanza della conservazione artistica nella cultura collettiva. Inoltre, il progetto mira a diventare un nuovo polo culturale per la città di Milano, contribuendo alla riqualificazione del quartiere Musocco e riaffermando il ruolo centrale dell'artigianato nella definizione dell'identità urbana. Attraverso un'armoniosa integrazione tra metodologie storiche e tecnologie contemporanee, questo spazio renderà omaggio al ricco patrimonio di Milano, coniugandolo con l'equilibrio tra richieste conservatrici ed esigenze attuali.
