Housing is a pressing topic in contemporary cities worldwide, leading to discussions on sustainable living models, environmentally and socially. Architectural design is called to redefine not only the private domestic realm but also the relations this establishes with the surrounding urban, social and environmental spheres. Cooperative living is one such successful model of urban dwelling that encourages spatial flexibility, different degrees of publicness, community interaction and shared resources. Introducing this model in the periphery the city of Padua aims to renew and regenerate the existing area by promoting new interactions between the old and the new elements, the community and the individual, inside and outside. The coveted site of the project is an area located at one of the southern entrances to the city, adjacent to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta al Bassanello, the river junction between the Bacchiglione river, Canale Battaglia and Canale Scaricatore, and the access south-west to the Parco delle Mura e delle Acque. Today Bassanello remains a place of great importance for the city which, starting from the second half of the twentieth century, expanded southwards initially along the radial axes and subsequently progressing to the areas included between the historic city and the ring roads, establishing an indirect continuity with the neighboring municipality of Albignasego. The buildings present in the site date back mainly to the second half of the nineteenth century, and were originally residential buildings with commercial functions on the ground level. An exemption is the former Bassanello war memorial kindergarten, which delimits the courtyard of the church of Santa Maria Assunta on the west side, mediating between the latter and the residential core. The design strategy is founded on three main themes, around which urban analysis, theoretical and design research is conducted: urban grafting that considers new morphological integrations in the pre-existing context by means of contextual sensibility (Redefining urban forms), the architecture of the in-between, which reinterprets and enhances the multitude of transitional spaces present in the area (Inhabiting the in-between), and new forms of communal living, understanding cooperative living (Building community). Though the major focus is on the architecture of the new building complex, the connections this establishes with the immediate urban context are also included in the scope of the project. The design proposal envisions to introduce new forms of communal living, redefining the transitions between private and domestic spheres, with an emphasis on activating and inhabiting a system of intermediate spaces between the domestic sphere and the city. The objective of the project is the development of a unitary design proposal, on both urban and architectural scales, to integrate new spaces and artifacts into the existing built environment, in the context of a cooperative residence. The design intervention aims to give a response underlining the importance of introducing new forms of domesticity and urbanity, and therefore new relationships between inhabitants and the surrounding physical and social context to foster novel patterns of living in peri-urban areas.

Abstract
The design intervention aims to give a response underlining the importance of introducing new forms of domesticity and urbanity, and therefore new relationships between inhabitants and the surrounding physical and social context to foster novel patterns of living in peri-urban areas.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
