Bergamo faces a critical challenge of fragmented and underutilized green spaces that lack connectivity and fail to function as a cohesive ecological network. This thesis proposes the Green Circle Line, a strategic greenbelt designed to integrate these disconnected areas through nature-based solutions. By transforming agricultural land and abandoned spaces into functional green infrastructure, this initiative enhances urban resilience, promotes biodiversity, and fosters sustainable urban development. The project serves as a scalable model for cities facing similar ecological and spatial challenges. A key component of this proposal is the implementation of site-specific interventions across three strategic zones: Zone 01: Agro-Environmental Park – A multifunctional landscape connecting the Colli Ecological System with the Hospital Park, integrating agriculture, healthcare, and hospitality functions. The park preserves historical irrigation channels, supports urban farming, and enhances biodiversity while mitigating urban heat and improving air quality. Zone 02: Strategic Urban and Ecological Nexus – A large-scale urban park serving as a key territorial node for ecological, social, and recreational dynamics. It strengthens ecological networks, improves hydrological resilience, and introduces cultural and sports infrastructure to foster urban synergy. Zone 03: Green Bridge and Biodiversity Connector – A proposed vegetated bridge over the railway that reconnects the city’s fragmented urban fabric while functioning as an ecological corridor. Designed to facilitate biodiversity movement, it also acts as an air-quality buffer. The Green Circle Line is conceived as a flexible and adaptive strategy that integrates green infrastructure into Bergamo’s urban planning. Beyond ecological restoration, it acts as a catalyst for social engagement and economic resilience. By harmonizing urban growth with environmental preservation, this initiative presents a replicable model for mid-sized cities seeking sustainable and resilient development.
Bergamo affronta una sfida critica legata alla frammentazione e al sottoutilizzo degli spazi verdi, che risultano scollegati e incapaci di funzionare come una rete ecologica coerente. Questa tesi propone il Green Circle Line, una cintura verde strategica progettata per integrare queste aree disconnesse attraverso soluzioni basate sulla natura. Trasformando terreni agricoli e spazi abbandonati in infrastrutture verdi funzionali, l’iniziativa rafforza la resilienza urbana, promuove la biodiversità e favorisce uno sviluppo urbano sostenibile. Il progetto rappresenta un modello scalabile per città che affrontano sfide ecologiche e spaziali simili. Un elemento chiave della proposta è l’attuazione di interventi specifici in tre zone strategiche: Zona 01: Parco Agro-Ambientale – Un paesaggio multifunzionale che collega il Sistema Ecologico dei Colli con il Parco dell’Ospedale, integrando agricoltura, sanità e ospitalità. Il parco preserva i canali di irrigazione storici, supporta l’agricoltura urbana e potenzia la biodiversità, contribuendo al tempo stesso alla mitigazione dell’isola di calore e al miglioramento della qualità dell’aria. Zona 02: Nodo Urbano ed Ecologico Strategico – Un grande parco urbano che funge da nodo territoriale chiave per le dinamiche ecologiche, sociali e ricreative. Il progetto rafforza le reti ecologiche, migliora la resilienza idrologica e introduce infrastrutture culturali e sportive per favorire la sinergia urbana. Zona 03: Ponte Verde e Corridoio per la Biodiversità – Un ponte vegetato proposto sopra la ferrovia, progettato per riconnettere il tessuto urbano frammentato della città e funzionare come corridoio ecologico. Oltre a facilitare il movimento della biodiversità, agisce come filtro per la qualità dell’aria. Il Green Circle Line è concepito come una strategia flessibile e adattiva che integra le infrastrutture verdi nella pianificazione urbana di Bergamo. Oltre a rappresentare un intervento di restauro ambientale, il progetto si configura come un catalizzatore per l’inclusione sociale e la resilienza economica. Armonizzando crescita urbana e conservazione ambientale, questa iniziativa si propone come modello replicabile per le città di medie dimensioni che mirano a uno sviluppo sostenibile e resiliente.
