Turkey has a very high seismicity which presents a significant risk to its architectural heritage, particularly historical masonry mosques. Despite this significance, there is no standardized method for seismic damage assessment, which is important for choosing a correct repair and strengthening intervention strategy consisting of priority of intervention and intervention type. This thesis aims to develop an initial rapid seismic assessment method for historical masonry mosques by proposing a seismic damage assessment form using the Italian ADC form for churches as a basis. As a preliminary work, mosques are characterized into types depending on their architectural features. The main structural components of the mosques, or macro elements, are identified by analyzing over a hundred mosques. Damage mechanisms typical of each macro element are determined based on real-life earthquake damage cases and seismic structural analyses. On this basis, the survey form is finally developed as a tool to collect damage data for mosques in a standardized and systematic way. During assessment, the damage mechanisms of each mosque are evaluated by a damage scoring system based on the European Macroseismic Scale. Although this thesis focuses on post-earthquake damage assessment, it may be the groundwork for future research to develop as well preventive seismic vulnerability assessment procedures.

Abstract
Although this thesis focuses on post-earthquake damage assessment, it may be the groundwork for future research to develop as well preventive seismic vulnerability assessment procedures.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
