Tourism as a sector is one of the biggest economic powerhouses in the world, contributing about 10% of the world’s GDP – Gross Domestic Product – and indirectly providing more than the 10% of the global employment. Environmentally speaking, the consequences are substantial: between transportation, construction and other related services, the travel and tourism industry is responsible for roughly 8% of the world’s carbon emissions. As a result, the concepts of sustainable development, sustainable tourism and eco-tourism are becoming more important than ever, emerging as a way to mitigate the environmental impact of the tourism sector by focusing on the conservation and respect of the natural environment, and striving to have a minimal impact on it and its local communities. The thesis aims at understanding the role that architecture and landscape design play in eco-tourism, looking at positive examples of sustainable architecture in eco-tourism development projects, and provides a comparative qualitative analysis of four leading case studies in order to identify the tools and best practices that can be defined as successful for sustainable architecture and landscape design.

Abstract
The thesis aims at understanding the role that architecture and landscape design play in eco-tourism, looking at positive examples of sustainable architecture in eco-tourism development projects, and provides a comparative qualitative analysis of four leading case studies in order to identify the tools and best practices that can be defined as successful for sustainable architecture and landscape design.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
