Suolo come paesaggio : un progetto di cura per l'ex SNIA Viscosa di Pavia

This thesis explores the reuse of abandoned industrial areas, proposing an intervention that considers soil as an active element of the landscape. Soil retains memory and fosters new interactions between the natural and built environment. The case study of the former SNIA Viscosa site in Pavia offers an opportunity to redefine the relationship between the city and its surrounding territory through the creation of a new urban park. The first section examines the site’s historical evolution, the role of SNIA, and its decline. The transition from industrial expansion to abandonment has shaped the current landscape, where spontaneous vegetation coexists with the ruins of the demolished factory. The soil serves as a palimpsest, preserving traces of the past while accommodating new processes of spontaneous settlement. The study also analyzes territorial dynamics, focusing on ecological networks and infrastructure. The second section outlines the proposed redevelopment, which considers the site’s connection to the Ticino Park and the agricultural landscape of Roggia Vernavola. The intervention includes a remediation system based on phytoremediation, enabling environmental recovery without invasive operations. Walkways ensure public access to the area even during the remediation process. The project also includes open spaces for the city, the restoration of protected buildings, and new structures serving the park. This thesis reflects on the implications of abandonment and care, the role of landscape as a dynamic infrastructure, and soil as an archive of memory and transformation. The intervention is not merely a functional response to deindustrialization but an exploration of transformation as an open-ended process. The landscape is conceived as a living entity with its own temporality. Balancing memory and change, the project values the unfinished and the adaptable, proposing a way of inhabiting the territory that embraces transformation rather than imposing fixed forms.

La tesi affronta il tema del riuso delle aree industriali dismesse, proponendo un intervento che consideri il suolo come elemento attivo del paesaggio, capace di trattenere memoria e accogliere nuove forme di interazione tra ambiente naturale e costruito. Il caso studio dell’ex area SNIA Viscosa di Pavia diventa l’occasione per ripensare il rapporto tra città e territorio attraverso la creazione di un nuovo parco urbano. La prima parte analizza l’evoluzione storica del sito, il ruolo della SNIA e il suo declino. La trasformazione dell’area, dall’espansione industriale all’abbandono, ha portato alla situazione attuale, in cui la vegetazione spontanea convive con le rovine della fabbrica demolita. Il suolo si presenta come un palinsesto che conserva le tracce del passato, ma al tempo stesso accoglie nuovi processi di insediamento spontaneo. Lo studio approfondisce anche le dinamiche territoriali, tra reti ecologiche e infrastrutture. La seconda parte descrive la proposta di riqualificazione, che considera il rapporto con il Parco del Ticino e il paesaggio agricolo della Roggia Vernavola. L’intervento prevede un sistema di bonifica basato sulla fitorimediazione, che permette di avviare un processo di risanamento senza operazioni invasive. La creazione di percorsi consente di rendere l’area fruibile già durante la bonifica. Il progetto prevede spazi aperti per la città, il recupero degli edifici vincolati e nuovi volumi a servizio del parco. La tesi si interroga sulle implicazioni dell’abbandono e della cura, sul ruolo del paesaggio come infrastruttura in costante trasformazione e sul suolo come archivio di tracce e possibilità. L’intervento non si limita a una risposta funzionale alla dismissione, ma esplora il significato della trasformazione come processo aperto, in cui il paesaggio non è passivo, ma un organismo vivo con una propria temporalità. Tra memoria e cambiamento, il progetto riconosce il valore dell’incompiuto e dell’adattabilità, suggerendo un modo di abitare il territorio che non impone forme definitive, ma accoglie il cambiamento come parte essenziale dello spazio.
