Dismissione e rinascita : la valorizzazione dell'Ex Zuccherificio di Sermide tra sport e cultura

The area of the former Sermide sugar refinery is an important testimony to the themes and values behind the degradation, very common in our peninsula, of industrial areas of the last century. With this thesis, we propose to design by addressing the controversies of abandonment to which the architectural artifact is subject, proposing our vision of how, through adaptive re-use, abandoned architecture is able to offer testimony of values, Past or recent cultures, traditions and customs. The thesis deals with the redevelopment and valorization of the entire area and the buildings that survived the demolition of 2010, starting from the Villa dei Direttori, the most representative artefact among those present, but also the most debated because it is part of that architectural culture quite recent, and criticized, to make issues such as reuse and conservation a tangle of constraints and ethical discussions. Its designer, Renzo Zavanella, despite being a prominent figure in the architectural panorama of the mid-twentieth century is now little considered; For this it represents a significant trace of that story about rationalist architecture that deserves to be rediscovered and enhanced. Another key element of the project proposal is the presence of the Vento cycle path, designed by DAStU and under construction, about ten meters from the site opens up to different design possibilities. It has inspired us to transform the area into a center dedicated to cycling and sports in general, through spaces and activities designed to encourage well-being and promote social inclusion. Therefore, the project seeks to establish a dialogue between the historical heritage and the surrounding territory, on the one hand, seeking the balance between the preservation of architectural memory and the design of innovative and functional spaces; On the other hand, returning these spaces to the community, which until now have been closed to it, meeting its needs and habits, offering spaces and services of cohesion and psycho-physical well-being.

L’area dell’Ex Zuccherificio di Sermide è un’importante testimonianza di tematiche e valori celati dietro il degrado, molto comune nella nostra penisola, di aree industriali del secolo scorso. Con questa tesi ci proponiamo di progettare affrontando le controversie dell’abbandono a cui è soggetto il manufatto architettonico, proponendo una nostra visione di come, attraverso il riuso adattivo, l’architettura dismessa sia in grado di offrire testimonianza di valori, culture, tradizioni e usi passati o più recenti. La tesi si occupa della riqualificazione e la valorizzazione dell’intera area e degli edifici sopravvissuti alla demolizione del 2010, partendo proprio dalla Villa dei Direttori, il manufatto più rappresentativo tra i presenti, ma anche il più dibattuto poiché facente parte di quella cultura architettonica abbastanza recente, e criticata, da rendere temi come il riuso e la conservazione un groviglio di vincoli e discussioni etiche. Il suo progettista, Renzo Zavanella, nonostante sia stato una figura rilevante nel panorama architettonico di metà Novecento oggi è poco considerato; per questo rappresenta una traccia significativa di quel racconto sull’architettura razionalista che merita di essere riscoperto e valorizzato. Un altro elemento chiave della proposta progettuale è la presenza della ciclovia Vento, progettata dal DAStU e in corso di realizzazione, a una decina di metri dal sito apre a diverse possibilità progettuali. Ci ha infatti ispirati nella trasformazione dell’area in un polo dedicato ai cicloturisti e allo sport in generale, attraverso spazi e attività pensate per incentivare il benessere e favorire l’inclusione sociale. Dunque, il progetto si occupa di instaurare un dialogo tra il patrimonio storico e il territorio circostante, da un lato, cercando l’equilibrio tra la conservazione della memoria architettonica e la progettazione di spazi innovativi e funzionali; dall’altro, restituendo questi spazi alla comunità, che sino ad ora le sono stati preclusi, andando incontro alle sue esigenze e abitudini, offrendo spazi e servizi di coesione e benessere psicofisico.
