Environmental sustainability is a growing priority in the agri-food sector, where logistics plays a crucial role in reducing environmental impact, improving efficiency, and ensuring supply chain resilience. Despite increasing attention to sustainable logistics, there is still limited understanding of how companies implement these strategies in specific regional contexts. This thesis addresses this gap by analysing the logistical challenges faced by agri-food companies in Emilia-Romagna and examining the solutions they have adopted, considering the influence of company size and the relationship between economic and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the impacts of adopted solutions will be considered and the relationship between economic and environmental aspects in decision-making processes will be analysed. To achieve this objective, the study employs a two-part methodology: a narrative literature review to establish the theoretical framework and a multiple case study involving 14 companies operating in various segments of the agri-food supply chain. The findings highlight significant differences in the adoption of sustainability strategies, with larger firms leveraging structured frameworks and technological solutions, while SMEs focus on incremental improvements due to financial and operational constraints. Collaboration emerges as a key factor in overcoming logistical inefficiencies, though economic feasibility and regulatory uncertainty remain major barriers to broader adoption. This research contributes to existing literature by offering an empirical analysis of a previously unexplored regional context and refining sustainability frameworks to better align with real-world logistics practices. From a practical perspective, it provides insights for businesses seeking to integrate sustainability into their logistics operations. Future research should expand the sample, track long-term sustainability trends, and assess the environmental impact of cooperative business models. To achieve this objective, the study employs a two-part methodology: a narrative literature review to establish the theoretical framework and a multiple case study involving 14 companies operating in various segments of the agri-food supply chain.
