Abstract
In an increasingly complex and uncertain world, organizations face challenges that require a shift from predictive models to more imaginative approaches to future-making. This study explores how organizational actors engage in the transformation of knowledge to envision distant futures. An ethnographic study of two workshops, Framing and Reframing Factory, held at the Futures Observatory of Politecnico di Milano, is used to investigates how various types of knowledge emerges, interact and change throughout the co-creation of distant futures. This study identifies four main types of practical knowledge transformation: Systematic Practical Knowledge, Embedded Practical Knowledge, Exploratory Practical Knowledge and Applied Practical Knowledge. According to the results, knowledge transformation in future-making is a dynamic process in which imaginative visions are continuously negotiated, refined and materialized through interaction, artifacts and collaboration. By analyzing conversations, collaborative practices, and the iterative construction of future artifacts, the research shows how organizations overcome traditional foresight to actively shape desirable futures. The study contributes to the understanding of knowledge transformation in speculative and imaginative contexts, offering new perspectives on how organizations harness creativity and collective intelligence to deal with uncertainty.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
