This thesis examines Milanese courtyards through the metaphor of a pause—a moment that preserves history while leaving space for new stories. These courtyards are not empty voids but living spaces where the past and future intersect. A courtyard is a threshold—an in-between space—allowing oscillation between indoors and outdoors, intimacy and exposure, enclosure and openness, turning the pause into a transition. Three key themes guide this study. First, Milanese courtyards are active spaces that evolve through renovations, cultural shifts, and changing uses. Second, courtyards function like paintings: we experience them as complete compositions, but their details—shape our experience. Finally, courtyards serve as archives, preserving traces of daily routines, celebrations, and moments of stillness—archives of individual lives and Milan’s collective memory, waiting to be read by those who slow down. By framing the pause as a tool for design and observation, this project reimagines courtyards as spaces for thoughtful urban growth. Milanese courtyards show how development can honor the past while embracing the future. In a fast-paced world, they remind us that movement and stillness are not opposites, but phases of the same rhythm—that sometimes, the best way forward is to pause, embrace the in-between, and allow the transition to unfold.
Questa tesi esamina i cortili milanesi attraverso la metafora di una pausa—un momento che preserva la storia lasciando al contempo spazio a nuove narrazioni. Questi cortili non sono vuoti inerti, ma spazi vivi in cui passato e futuro si intrecciano. Il cortile è una soglia—uno spazio intermedio—che consente un'oscillazione tra interno ed esterno, intimità ed esposizione, chiusura e apertura, trasformando la pausa in una transizione. Tre temi chiave guidano questo studio. Primo, i cortili milanesi sono spazi attivi che si evolvono attraverso ristrutturazioni, cambiamenti culturali e usi mutevoli. Secondo, i cortili funzionano come dipinti: li percepiamo come composizioni complete, ma sono i loro dettagli a plasmare la nostra esperienza. Infine, i cortili sono archivi che conservano tracce di routine quotidiane, celebrazioni e momenti di quiete—archivi di vite individuali e della memoria collettiva di Milano, in attesa di essere letti da chi sa rallentare. Considerando la pausa come uno strumento di progettazione e osservazione, questo progetto reinterpreta i cortili come spazi per una crescita urbana consapevole. I cortili milanesi mostrano come lo sviluppo possa onorare il passato accogliendo al contempo il futuro. In un mondo frenetico, ci ricordano che movimento e quiete non sono opposti, ma fasi di uno stesso ritmo—che a volte, il miglior modo di avanzare è fermarsi, abbracciare l'intervallo e lasciare che la transizione si compia.
