The collaboration between Sonos and Spotify is a great example of platform interaction within digital ecosystems. This integration allows Sonos users to seamlessly access their Spotify accounts directly through the Sonos app without switching between platforms, creating a highly immersive experience. However, this is not merely a simple collaboration but rather an instance of a nested platform—a newly emerging platform strategy characterized by the deep integration of a “guest platform” within the ecosystem of a “host platform”. While platform literature has provided critical insights into platform dynamics, it has only indirectly addressed the phenomenon of nested platforms. The limited understanding of this model highlights the need for further study. To address this gap, this study pursues two key objectives: (1) define the characteristics of nested platforms from a platform strategy perspective and (2) examine how firms are adopting a “nested platform” approach. To achieve these goals, the research follows a qualitative, empirical approach, analysing a dataset of 154 Nested Platform cases. The findings reveal that nested platforms are structured around three fundamental characteristics: cross-type of platform, type of complementarity (vertical or horizontal), and interface type (clusters A, B, or C). Additionally, the analysis of the empirical evidence highlights patterns in how these three key traits interact as well as their strategic implications, offering insights into how companies are currently implementing the nested platform approach. From a theoretical perspective, this thesis makes significant contributions to platform literature by introducing a comprehensive definition of nested platforms, expanding knowledge on fundamental platform concepts, and emphasizing the strategic importance of complementarity and interface design. From a practical standpoint, it provides a framework for managers to determine when and how to implement a nested platform strategy, along with strategic guidelines for making key decisions within this model. These contributions establish nested platforms as a distinct strategic model, laying the groundwork for further research and enriching platform literature.

Abstract
These contributions establish nested platforms as a distinct strategic model, laying the groundwork for further research and enriching platform literature.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
