The project “Patios” Urbani (courtyards in portuguese and urban in italian), was conceived with the goal of revitalizing certain spaces in the Martin Moniz neighborhood of Lisbon, characterized by urban voids within the dense street network of the area. Despite its central location and the constant flow of tourists, the neighborhood has been neglected over the years, now presenting areas of decay and a strong social stigma. The proposed intervention aims to transform these residual spaces into places of gathering and urban quality, restoring them to a new public function. The design inspiration comes from an in-depth analysis of the courtyard concept, understood in its most traditional sense: an open yet protected space that was once the heart of domestic life and family interaction. In past societies, the courtyard was a key meeting place for families, but with the evolution of cities and housing models, this dimension has progressively disappeared, shifting social interactions toward new public spaces that are accessible to all and experienced by choice. The project seeks to reinterpret the essence of the courtyard in a contemporary way, adapting it to an urban and collective context. The interventions are designed to enhance certain areas already naturally enclosed by the surrounding buildings, making them similar in shape and size to a more traditional courtyard concept. By restoring these spaces with a renewed identity, the project fosters conviviality, protection, and the poetic nature of lived-in spaces. Specifically, the project focuses on the creation of three spaces within the neighborhood, each giving rise to a distinct courtyard, just as the functions traditionally performed in a courtyard can vary. However, all three spaces are connected by a coherent design approach, as well as a consistent use of colors and materials, reinforcing their identity and their relationship with the urban context. Through careful spatial and architectural design, “Patios” Urbani presents itself as an opportunity for sensitive and inclusive urban regeneration, rebuilding a sense of belonging and community in a neighborhood undergoing transformation.

Abstract
Through careful spatial and architectural design, “Patios” Urbani presents itself as an opportunity for sensitive and inclusive urban regeneration, rebuilding a sense of belonging and community in a neighborhood undergoing transformation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
