This study investigates the rethinking and revitalization of the military fortifications heritage landscape in Cologne, Germany. Cologne, with its rich historical background, has an urban structure and landscape design heavily influenced by its military past. Up until the early 1920s, Cologne's urban planning situation was influenced by the fortress conditions of the city. The military fortresses, remnants of which date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, mark significant historical periods and reflect the city's strategic importance. The city's greenbelt system, initially designed to provide green spaces, recreational areas, and ecological functions, has evolved into a significant component of urban green spaces. By applying the concept of palimpsest, this research analyzes the overlapping layers of green systems and military historical heritage. The outer greenbelt of Cologne, designed along the former military fortresses, exemplifies these overlapping historical and cultural layers. This overlapping inspired the proposal to use the greenbelt as a base to reactivate the military fortresses, linking them into a continuous slow mobility system, and creating a vibrant cultural trail. The ultimate goal is to use the greenbelt as a base to create a continuous palimpsest landscape by providing multifunctional landscape infrastructure. The proposed approach primarily aims to use the outer greenbelt as a base, with the heritage landscape of the outer fortification system serving as interconnected vibrant points, creating a unique circular landscape loop. This study is necessary as it explores the potential of integrating historical heritage with contemporary urban needs, offering multifunctional public spaces for urban residents. The feasibility of this research lies in the abundant historical resources and existing greenbelt infrastructure in Cologne, making it a highly researchable topic with ample data and practical examples to support the study.

Abstract
The feasibility of this research lies in the abundant historical resources and existing greenbelt infrastructure in Cologne, making it a highly researchable topic with ample data and practical examples to support the study.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
