Corpoconfine : spatial heterotopias and chronotopic devices for the transiting migration phenomenon

The present era could be described as the Space Age: a time characterized by simultaneity, juxtaposition, speed, and hyperconnection. Dislocated and overlapping spaces, geographically distant but virtually close, open like the European Union but closed like Fortress Europe. The thesis entitled “CORPOCONFINE. Spatial heterotopias and chronotopic devices for the transiting migratory phenomenon” explores the spatial and temporal dimensions of contemporary migratory phenomenon, adopting a theoretical approach based on the concepts of heterotopia, non-place, and impermanence, inspired by the works of Michel Foucault and Marc Augé. The analysis proceeds with a progressive zoom from the global to the local, focusing on the city of Milan, and investigates transit spaces as anonymous and elusive places, often invisible on official maps as well as in the mental maps of each of us. The aim is to de-opacify these invisible geographies, making them visible again in everyday geography. The central concept of CorpoConfine interprets the border not as a fixed line but as a process in continuous transformation, embodied by the very bodies of the migrants who cross it and redefine it constantly. The thesis, therefore, proposes a critical reflection on urban spaces, conceived not as barriers, but as thresholds capable of accommodating the complexity of inhabiting, of which the Body as a Boundary is the never-expressed focal point.

L’epoca odierna potrebbe essere descritta come epoca dello Spazio: un tempo caratterizzato dalla simultaneità, dalla giustapposizione, dalla velocità e dall’iperconnessione. Spazi dislocati e sovrapposti, lontani geograficamente ma vicini virtualmente, aperti come l’Unione Europea ma chiusi come la Fortezza Europa. La tesi intitolata “CORPOCONFINE. Eterotopie spaziali e dispositivi cronotopici per il fenomeno migratorio transitante” esplora le dimensioni spaziali e temporali del fenomeno migratorio contemporaneo, adottando un approccio teorico basato sui concetti di eterotopia, non-luogo e impermanenza, ispirandosi ai lavori di Michel Foucault e Marc Augé. L’analisi procede con uno zoom progressivo dal globale al locale, con un focus sulla città di Milano e indaga gli spazi di transito come luoghi anonimi e sfuggenti, spesso invisibili nelle mappe ufficiali come in quelle mentali di ognuno di noi. L’obiettivo è de-opacizzare queste geografie invisibili, rendendole nuovamente visibili nella geografia quotidiana. Il concetto centrale di CorpoConfine interpreta il confine non come una linea fissa, ma come un processo in continua trasformazione, incarnato dai corpi stessi dei migranti che lo attraversano e lo ridefiniscono continuamente. La tesi propone quindi una riflessione critica sugli spazi urbani, concepiti non come barriere, ma come soglie capaci di accogliere la complessità dell’abitare che ha come punto mai espresso il Corpo come Confine.
