This project is located in Beihu Street, Wuhan, part of the “Wuhan Financial District,” which hosts numerous Fortune 500 companies and a workforce of 11,000. The area benefits from rich cultural, educational, healthcare, and tourism resources, picturesque natural scenery, efficient transportation, and well-planned urban infrastructure. In recent years, Beihu Street has undergone a green transformation, enhancing its community, residential life, and commercial vitality. In response to the municipal student competition focusing on green spaces, climate adaptability, connectivity, and sustainable living, this project proposes a redevelopment strategy for Beihu Street to foster compact, green, and thriving neighborhoods. The project targets an outdated and chaotic block, demolishing old and abandoned buildings to allocate 80% of the site to green spaces, including rain gardens, community farms, and extensive recreational areas. These green spaces enhance public amenities for residents and nearby schools. The architectural solution involves vertical expansion, creating a multifunctional complex that blends residential and public spaces. A continuous, comfortable ramp weaves through the building, providing seamless barrier-free access from the ground floor to the rooftop. Along the ramp, diverse public activity spaces form a vertical “sky street,” which integrates communal areas with residential units while maintaining clear boundaries. Additionally, shared planting balconies are introduced to address Wuhan’s hot summer climate, offering shade, promoting energy efficiency, and supporting a sustainable, green, and thriving urban lifestyle.
