In a world where design norms have been summarily defined using men as the main reference, this thesis proposes to address this status quo: the roots of gender biases are addressed through a social experiment and the use of defined images to bring cultural biases to the surface. The aim is to explore how standardization has led to the creation of design norms that take little account of otherness, taking the male gender as neutral, male as norm (Bucchetti, 2024), and the female gender and all other gender identities remain peripheral in design thinking. The thesis project was created to explore with a speculative and experimental approach some of the motivations behind discriminatory attitudes - conscious and unconscious -, with a focus on the theme of gender equality; this is deemed necessary because, to date, there is an obsolete collective view of feminism based solely on male-female dualism, no longer inclusive. In addition to typical tools to support design reflection, such as surveys, online tests, and focus groups, this thesis also uses tools such as the IAT (Implicit Association Test) with AI-generated images and illustrations created by the author, to explore how the subconscious influences categorization through iconographic concepts, stimulating introspective reflection on cognitive biases.

Abstract
In addition to typical tools to support design reflection, such as surveys, online tests, and focus groups, this thesis also uses tools such as the IAT (Implicit Association Test) with AI-generated images and illustrations created by the author, to explore how the subconscious influences categorization through iconographic concepts, stimulating introspective reflection on cognitive biases.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
