The progress and future of a country like Italy are, to date, closely linked to the ability to reinvent currently unused, residual, degraded or abandoned spaces. Sport can play a key role in urban and social regeneration, offering a significant opportunity to improve the quality of life for citizens. In particularly problematic urban contexts such as Naples, where distressed neighborhoods are on the rise, redevelopment through sport emerges as an effective solution. In the specific context, the cultural identity and sporting tradition of Naples is noted to be of strong attraction, which constitutes an added value to the theme of sport as an engine for change. However, the system of sports facilities in Italy lags significantly behind international standards. Although they are deeply rooted in the country’s architectural memory and culture, the obsolescence of the facilities, to date, does not reflect their historical relevance. It is therefore essential to think about the redevelopment of these large artifacts at the urban scale and not of the individual building as generators of urban development, rather than considering them only as icons of the past. As reported in the dossier for “UEFA EURO 2032,” ten cities with their stadiums have been selected for the bid, including Naples, which in addition to providing a “fan experience”1, would represent a unique opportunity to enhance Italy’s cultural and sports heritage, promote the development and modernization of sports infrastructure, and redevelop the urban contexts in which they are located. However, the success of an event of the caliber of “UEFA EURO 2032” will require long-term planning to ensure sustainable use of the facilities even after the event. The neglect and degradation that often follow major sporting events represent a significant challenge, requiring a strategic, innovative and functional approach. Indeed, it is on these assumptions that the objectives of this thesis project are outlined. The “Diego Armando Maradona Stadium,” in the Fuorigrotta neighborhood of Naples, is in need of significant redevelopment, both in order to comply with UEFA and FIGC regulations and to contribute significantly to the growth and well-being of the community. The new stadium project could act as a catalyst by restoring value and integrity to the neighborhood. The thesis project was developed from some urban-scale reflections. The interventions include the redevelopment of green spaces and the road system, up to the integration of the stadium with the neighborhood and the Mostra d’Oltremare. The architectural design is marked by articulated floor plans and a dynamic exterior cladding membrane inspired by local tradition. The metal structure recalls the threads of hanging laundry, a symbol of everyday life and Neapolitan identity, which supports lightweight and technological panels that act as shading. In this way, the new “Diego Armando Maradona Stadium,” will not only be a renovated sports facility, but a symbol of urban and social regeneration, capable of combining history, identity and innovation.
