This paper originated from a fascination with the ingenuity and aesthetic of traditional Japanese joinery. It lead to the will to learn more deeply about it and by the interrogation that is whether this ancient craft retains value in today’s world that had expanded tremendusly the number of ways we join objects. The research delves into the historical evolution of Japanese joinery, the characteristics of the wood and the comparison with its western peers. Follows a representation of a selection of the most important joints. In the second part, through case studies, this study shows that Japanese joinery offers valuable insights into sustainable design, innovative structural solutions, and the enduring importance of craftsmanship in a rapidly changing world, ultimately demonstrating its continued relevance and potential for future applications. Through such a twofold approach, not only the eternal value of Japanese joinery is emphasized, but also there are new approaches prompted that honor and reinterpret these ancient traditions in contemporary design. In short, the thesis seeks to show how techniques from the ancient times can inspire modern design solutions, giving designers helpful advice and creative inspiration on how to hone their skills by applying tested methods.

Abstract
In short, the thesis seeks to show how techniques from the ancient times can inspire modern design solutions, giving designers helpful advice and creative inspiration on how to hone their skills by applying tested methods.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
