The following thesis is based on the awareness that the construction sector is one of the main responsible for the consumption of natural resources, greenhouse gas emissions and waste production. However, over the years, environmental awareness continues to grow and, as a result, the need to reduce the negative impacts of construction by using environmentally friendly materials and adopting eco-sustainable strategies. In particular, this research focuses on the use of straw as an innovative building material and its application in contexts where needs require economic and ecological solutions. The objective of this thesis is to analyse straw as a resource for construction, studying its characteristics and limitations, in order to apply it to an ideal project in an existing context. The research is structured in two main parts. The first part provides a general analysis of building materials, sustainable architecture strategies and bio-based materials. Here it also emerges that straw, which is a derivative of crops, can become an excellent material for buildings thanks to its characteristics of insulation, fire resistance and moisture regulation. In addition, being an abundant and renewable resource, it offers very significant advantages over cement and steel in terms of costs and CO2 emissions. In this phase, the main construction methods with straw and its applicability to the different technological units that make up the building system are described, both through a theoretical analysis and through the consultation of significant case studies.. The second part of the thesis focuses, instead, on the application of the concepts analyzed in the research phase. The case study, selected after defining some criteria for choice, is the Caminho da Fè in Brazil. In this place, frequented by a high number of pilgrims and characterized by a shortage of inns for the reception, it is proposed to integrate a constructive module based on straw technologies. The project is designed to be flexible both in terms of space, which varies according to the needs of the section of route in which it is placed, and of function. Having defined the project in its components and technologies, is relevant the thesis section in which we go to investigate the life cycle of the materials used to have a general overview of the environmental impacts related to the specific project and can be evident the sustainability of straw.
