The redevelopment of industrial heritage is a complex process that requires an approach that takes into account various aspects, integrating historic preservation, urban regeneration and socioeconomic revitalization. This thesis explores the challenges and opportunities related to the reuse of former industrial sites, focusing on Tarragona’s Tabacalera, once a thriving tobacco factory, now in a state of vacancy. The research analyzes how the industrial heritage can be reinterpreted as a connecting element between different urban dynamics, bridging the separation between Tarragona’s historic center, the Francolí River and the industrial port area. The study places this transformation within the broader framework of industrial reconversion strategies, assessing how spatial, social and economic factors can influence the adaptation of these structures to contemporary urban needs. The Tabacalera becomes a new way for a design methodology that redefines its role within the city, strengthening its local identity. The project takes advantage of the architectural qualities of the existing building-the modular structural grid, large open spaces and interior courtyards-to propose a hub for apprentices and young professionals, with spaces dedicated to vocational training in the metal and wood sectors, cultural programs and a brewery. The result is a adaptable environment that integrates industrial production, training and community involvement. Through studying the potential of industrial heritage reuse, this thesis aims to demonstrate how historic structures can be reintegrated into the urban fabric, creating a permeable interface between city and industry. Tarragona’s Tabacalera is not only a place of memory, but a catalyst for innovation, social interaction and economic growth.

Abstract
Tarragona’s Tabacalera is not only a place of memory, but a catalyst for innovation, social interaction and economic growth.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
