An opportunity of repair over Amazon waters : uma oportunidade de repação sobre águas da Amazônia

In 2025 Brazil will host the 30th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP30) in the city of Belém. Located within the Amazon Forest and at the estuary of the Amazon River Basin, the city becomes focal point of both global environmental discussions and urgent local needs. The event is expected to draw thousands of visitors, presenting the city several challenges, among them the critical issue of hotel accommodation shortage. Simultaneously, Belém faces a severe condition of inequalities, with a housing deficit of over 80 thousand homes. Under this scenario, this investigation proposes a strategy of using the COP30 as an opportunity to tackle long-term struggles of the city, leveraging changes which could bring benefits beyond the ephemerality of the event. The project is centered on the idea that accomodation structures built by the government for the global event could be repurposed into social housing afterwards, addressing both immediate necessities but also laying foundation for social repair in a landscape of extreme inequalities. In addition, the investigation exercises on the riverfront scale of Belém, considering the architectural project as a transformative prototype for natural repair, at the threshold space between land and river, between humans and nature. Ultimately, it is a research which considers the time which we live in, of climate emergency, and place, within the Amazon, as an opportunity for social and natural repair.

Nel 2025, il Brasile ospiterà la 30ª edizione della Conferenza delle Parti delle Nazioni Unite sui cambiamenti climatici (COP30) nella città di Belém. Situata all'interno della Foresta Amazzonica e alla foce del bacino del Rio delle Amazzoni, la città è al centro di discussioni ambientali globali e di urgenti necessità locali. Si prevede che l'evento attirerà migliaia di visitatori, ponendo la città di fronte a una serie di sfide, tra cui la questione critica della mancanza di alloggi alberghieri. Allo stesso tempo, Belém si trova ad affrontare una grave condizione di disuguaglianza, con un deficit abitativo di oltre 80.000 alloggi. In questo contesto, la ricerca propone una strategia per utilizzare la COP30 come un'opportunità per affrontare i problemi a lungo termine della città, facendo leva su cambiamenti che possono portare benefici oltre l'effimero dell'evento. Il progetto è incentrato sull'idea che le strutture ricettive costruite dal governo per l'evento globale possano essere successivamente riutilizzate per l'edilizia sociale, rispondendo ai bisogni immediati ma anche gettando le basi per un risarcimento sociale in un panorama di estreme disuguaglianze. Inoltre, la ricerca si concentra sulla scala del lungofiume di Belém, considerando il progetto architettonico come un prototipo trasformativo di riparazione naturale, nello spazio di soglia tra terra e fiume, tra uomo e natura. Infine, è un'indagine che considera il tempo in cui viviamo, di emergenza climatica, e il luogo, in Amazzonia, come un'opportunità di riparazione sociale e naturale.
