Healthcare facilities are subject on a daily basis to operational inefficiencies, including unoptimized workflows, medical errors responsible for thousands of deaths, lost equipment and substantial staff time devoted to locating and inventorying assets, as well as ever-rising costs. To improve the quality of care and contain expenses, innovative solutions capable of addressing these challenges are being explored. Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) have proven particularly promising, enabling real-time tracking of staff, equipment and patients, promoting resource optimization, reducing response times and fostering the development of intelligent services aimed at improving the efficiency of hospital processes. Although the operational benefits are well documented in the literature, large-scale adoption of RTLS in healthcare organizations remains limited. This study aims to identify the most promising technologies for implementing RTLS in hospital settings, describe application scenarios in which these solutions have delivered concrete operational advantages, and propose a methodological framework to support the evaluation and implementation of a Real Time Location System in a healthcare facility.
Le strutture sanitarie sono quotidianamente soggette a inefficienze operative, tra cui flussi di lavoro non ottimizzati, errori medici responsabili di migliaia di decessi, smarrimento di dispositivi e ingenti perdite di tempo del personale dedicate alla localizzazione e all’inventario, oltre a costi in costante aumento. Per migliorare la qualità dell’assistenza e contenere le spese, si stanno esplorando soluzioni innovative capaci di rispondere a queste criticità. I Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) si rivelano particolarmente promettenti consentendo il monitoraggio in tempo reale di personale, attrezzature e pazienti, favorendo l’ottimizzazione delle risorse, la riduzione dei tempi di intervento e lo sviluppo di servizi intelligenti che mirano al miglioramento dell'efficienza dei processi ospedalieri. Nonostante i benefici di efficienza operativa siano documentati dalla letteratura, l’adozione su larga scala dei RTLS nelle organizzazioni sanitarie rimane limitata. Il presente studio si propone di individuare le tecnologie più promettenti per l’implementazione di sistemi RTLS in ambito ospedaliero, descrivere scenari applicativi in cui queste soluzioni hanno apportato vantaggi operativi concreti e proporre un framework metodologico volto a supportare la valutazione e l’implementazione di un Real Time Location System in una struttura sanitaria.
