Upcycling is a key strategy for addressing textile waste within the circular fashion industry. However, when poorly planned and executed, it can lead to increased material waste, inefficiencies, and resource consumption, sometimes making it less sustainable than linear fashion production. This study examines current upcycling design processes through qualitative research, including a systematic review and interviews with industry professionals, to identify their limitations and potential. Based on these insights, the research proposes a structured creative methodology that seeks to optimise upcycling by maximising the use of entire garments as design elements while reallocating textile industry waste throughout the process. To validate this methodology, the study develops a capsule collection, demonstrating how innovations such as modular design and zero- waste principles can enhance scalability and efficiency. By refining these processes, this research contributes to a more practical and replicable upcycling model for the fashion industry.
L’upcycling è una strategia fondamentale per affrontare gli sprechi tessili nell’industria della moda circolare. Tuttavia, se pianificato ed eseguito in modo inadeguato, può portare a un maggiore spreco di materiali, inefficienze e consumo di risorse, rendendolo talvolta meno sostenibile rispetto alla produzione lineare della moda. Questo studio esamina i processi di design upcycling attuali attraverso una ricerca qualitativa, che include una revisione sistematica e interviste con professionisti del settore, al fine di identificare i limiti e il potenziale. Sulla base di queste intuizioni, la ricerca propone una metodologia creativa strutturata che mira a ottimizzare l’upcycling, massimizzando l’uso dei capi interi come elementi di design e riallocando gli scarti dell’industria tessile durante il processo. Per convalidare questa metodologia, lo studio sviluppa una capsule collection, dimostrando come innovazioni come il design modulare e i principi zero- waste possano migliorare la scalabilità e l’efficienza. Attraverso l’ottimizzazione di questi processi, questa ricerca contribuisce a un modello di upcycling più pratico e replicabile per l’industria della moda.
