In the shadow of the transition: extended urbanisation of lithium, water struggles, and the contestation in the Brandenburg forest

This piece of research proposes a critical perspective on the green transition and the planetary implications it has in the rescaling of new territories affected by the landing of industrial and extractive infrastructures, and the political responses to the process. Especially to the downgrading created by the lithium value chain. These are processes that imply a series of actors and factors that configure diversely depending on the politico-institutional, regulatory, and social contexts. Through the NeoLefebvrian reading of Schmid and Brenner it can be understood the role of urbanisation and how green capitalism is operating hidden in plain sight. For this interrelation of processes, the urban will be understood as a dynamic process that happens in three moments which materialise in diverse directions, and the green transition as its new metabolic configuration. This reconfiguration brings with it new expression of the urban at a planetary scale, and so, new inhabiting practices and modes of existence and resistance. It will attempt to enlighten the green-Capital and State strategies, and the conflicts in the emergent resistance communities. This will be driven by looking at one of the critical minerals for the transition, lithium, and how it transforms the urban at both ends of the li-on battery value chain: from Chile’s Atacama Desert to the Brandenburg Forest in Berlin, and how both conflicts have at its base a natural component at risk, water. For this will be explored the case of the Berlin-Brandenburg Tesla Gigafactory and its landing dynamics, and its counterpart, the Tesla Stoppen Initiative, through a politico-temporal reconstruction of the conflict, the entanglement on the lithium GVC, the elaboration of an multiscalar lens for the narration and construction of a vision on conflicts under the shadows of the green transition, and reflecting on the power of radical politics and their transformative power.

Questo lavoro di ricerca propone una prospettiva critica sulla transizione verde e sulle implicazioni planetarie che essa ha nella ridefinizione di nuovi territori interessati da sbarco di infrastrutture industriali ed estrattive, e nelle risposte politiche a questo processo. In particolare si osserva la catena del valore del litio. Si tratta di processi che implicano una serie di attori e fattori che si configurano in modo diverso a seconda dei contesti politico-istituzionali, normativi e sociali. Attraverso la lettura neo-lefebvriana di Schmid e Brenner si può comprendere il ruolo dell’urbanizzazione e come il capitalismo verde operi in modi non sempre visibili. Per questa interrelazione di processi, l’urbano sarà inteso come un processo dinamico che avviene in tre momenti che si concretizzano in diverse direzioni, e la transizione verde come la sua nuova configurazione metabolica. Questa riconfigurazione porta con sé una nuova espressione dell’urbano a scala planetaria, e quindi nuove pratiche abitative e modalità di esistenza e resistenza. Si cercherà di mettere in luce le strategie del capitale verde e dello Stato e i conflitti nelle comunità di resistenza emergenti. Il tema sarà affrontato esaminando uno dei minerali critici per la transizione, il litio, e il modo in cui trasforma l’urbano ai due estremi della catena di valore delle batterie li-on: dal deserto di Atacama in Cile alla foresta di Brandeburgo a Berlino, e come entrambi i conflitti abbiano alla base una componente naturale a rischio, l’acqua. A questo scopo verrà esplorato il caso della Gigafactory Tesla di Berlino-Brandeburgo e le sue dinamiche di atterraggio, e la sua controparte, la Tesla Stoppen Initiative, attraverso una ricostruzione politico-temporale del conflitto, l’intreccio sulla GVC del litio, l’elaborazione di una lente multiscalare per la narrazione e la costruzione di una visione sui conflitti all’ombra della transizione verde, e la riflessione sulla forza della politica radicale e sul suo potere trasformativo.
