Architectural heritages function as concrete connections to our cultural identity, containing stories of history, craftsmanship, and socio-cultural values of previous eras. Examining these structures is essential for preservation and for their adaptation to contemporary requirements, which keeps their significance in today’s rapidly evolving urban environments. This thesis Titled Upholding the Heritage, focuses on the historic Fasil Bath structure in Gondar, Ethiopia, a 17th century heritage site constructed during the Gondarian period. The research investigates the site’s functional chronology, structural evolution, and architectural significance, and its unique synthesis of European, Indian, and vernacular influences. Among the notable Gondarian structures, Fasil Bath stands out for its distinctive two-story pavilion situated within a swimming pool, surrounded by circular guard towers and adjacent to a hidden secondary compound housing the ruined tomb of King Fasiledus’s horse Zobel. The study prioritizes intervention in this secondary compound for two key reasons: first, to minimize direct impact on the primary heritage structure, and second, to enhance urban connectivity due to the compound’s proximity to a major road. Methodologically, the research combines direct site analysis, comparative studies of Gondarian architecture including royal palaces and churches, interviews with scholars and church authorities, and archival document reviews. Through this multidisciplinary approach, the thesis evaluates the site’s historical chronology, structural condition, and past conservation efforts, including adaptive reuse attempts. The thesis is structured into five chapters: Chapter 1 outlines the research background and significance; Chapter 2 examines Gondar’s urban and architectural history, with a focus on pre-Gondarian and Gondarian styles, supplemented by a critical literature review; Chapter 3 analyzes the Fasil Bath site, from historical context to structural integrity, to identify contemporary functional needs for both the community and tourists; Chapter 4 assesses prior conservation and adaptive reuse interventions; and also it includes the case studies. And Chapter 5 proposes a design solution that addresses the site’s challenges while introducing a contemporary function, ensuring its preservation as a living heritage site.
