Family businesses represent the backbone of many industrial sectors, particularly in Italy, where they face the ongoing challenge of innovating while remaining faithful to their heritage. This thesis investigates how Italian family firms operating in emblematic Made in Italy sectors (namely food, fashion, furniture, and beverages) reinterpret their historical and cultural legacy to drive innovation. The research is grounded in the recognition of a paradox between innovation and tradition in family enterprises, and it addresses a gap in the existing literature concerning how this tension is managed in practice. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative multi-case approach. Thirteen Italian family firms were analyzed through semi-structured interviews with family members and key stakeholders, complemented by secondary data sources. The findings reveal three main insights. First, the companies studied innovate through tradition, that is, they reinterpret and enhance elements of their historical heritage in the development of new products and processes. Second, the transmission of know-how and values across generations occurs continuously and intentionally, serving as a bridge between past and future and mitigating the risk of knowledge loss during generational transitions. Third, innovation governance remains within the family but evolves: firms tend to balance their original identity with openness to external expertise, adopting hybrid organizational structures in which strategic leadership is retained by family members while involving external managers or dedicated teams when appropriate. This thesis provides novel empirical evidence on tradition-driven innovation, integrating innovation dynamics, knowledge transmission, and family governance into a unified framework.

Abstract
This thesis provides novel empirical evidence on tradition-driven innovation, integrating innovation dynamics, knowledge transmission, and family governance into a unified framework.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
