From hammock to hammock refuge to new realms: how a piece of cloth became an entire world.

Where does the meaning of things lie? Where does it come from? Beyond what we call reality, the physical world, there is another reality, or rather another level of reality, a transcendental one. This reality is inseparable from the physical world, it manifests itself in it and silently supports it. Without it, everything loses its meaning, words are just words, four walls and a roof are just four walls and a roof, empty. When it is present, however, four walls and a roof form a living house. The hammock teaches us how even a piece of fabric hung between two trees can come to life and transform into a home, becoming the center of a new world. A world in motion, silent, always present but not always easily accessible. The following thesis is the result of spontaneous field research carried out using hammocks from the summer of 2022 to the present day, together with Piero Fabbretti. Weekend excursions became adventures, in nature and in the city, and together with the need for a safe place to sleep away from home, they soon transformed the hammock into a faithful companion, a home, and a safe place. Fabrics and ropes, on the other hand, became experimental materials for creating hammocks, nets, and curtains. These experiences were collected through photographic material, which was cataloged and selected for the purposes of this study. The material was then divided into three chapters according to the structure of the thesis. The first chapter analyzes the hammock as an object in itself. It highlights its dependence on the surrounding space. In the second chapter, this dependence between product and space is observed in the emergence of a new element, a new space: the hammock refuge. The author Gaston Bachelard, in particular with his book Poetics of Space, helps us in our analysis of the hammock and the hammock shelter. It provides a fundamental key to a profound reading of the images through a phenomenological approach, as opposed to a rational one, which serves other purposes. Together, these approaches allow us to grasp reality in its entirety. In the concluding chapter, we will look at some projects carried out between spring 2023 and spring 2025 that have allowed us to bring the hammock experience to different contexts. Festival installations, private commissions, and other projects are the result of this research and, at the same time, become new material for its development, inspiration, and creativity.

Dove risiede il significato delle cose? Da dove arriva? Oltre a quella che definiamo realtà, il mondo fisico, esiste un’altra realtà, o meglio dire un altro livello di realtà, trascendentale. Tale realtà è indiscenribile dal mondo fisico, si manifesta in esso e silenziosamente lo supporta. Senza di essa ogni cosa perdere il suo significato, le parole sono solo parole, quattro mura e un tetto sono solo quatro mura e un tetto, vuote. Quando essa è presente, invece, quattro mura e un tetto formano una casa, viva. L’amaca, ci insegna come anche un pezzo di tessuto appeso tra due alberi può prendere vita e trasformarsi in una casa diventando il centro di un nuovo mondo. Un mondo in movimento, silenzioso, sempre presente ma non sempre facilmente accessibile. La seguente tesi è il frutto di un lavoro di ricerca spontanea avvenuta sul campo, utilizzando l’amaca, dall’estate del 2022 fino ad oggi assieme a Piero Fabbretti. Escursioni del fine settimana sono diventate avventure, in natura e in città, e assieme alla necessità di un luogo sicuro dove poter dormire lontani da casa, hanno ben presto trasformato l’amaca in un fedele compagno, una casa e un luogo sicuro. Tessuti e corde invece, sono diventate materiale di sperimentazione, nella creazione di amache, reti e tendaggi. Tale esperienze sono state raccolte tramite del materiale fotografico, il quale è stato catalogato e selezionato ai fini di questo studio. Il materiale è stato in seguito diviso seguendo la struttura della tesi in tre capitoli. Nel primo capitolo viene analizzata l’amaca come oggetto in se. Da esso ne emerge la sua dipendenza dallo spazio circostante. Nel secondo capitolo tale dipendenza tra prodotto e spazio viene osservata, nell’originarsi di un nuovo elemento, un nuovo spazio: il rifugio-amaca. A venirci incontro nell’analisi dell amaca e del rifugio amaca, è l’autore Gaston Bachelard, in particolare con il suo libro Poetics of space. Esso fornisce una chiave di lettura fondamentale per una profonda lettura delle immagini attraverso un’approccio fenomenologico, contrapposto a quello razionale, funzionale ad altri scopi. Assieme tali approcci permettono cogliere la realtà nella sua totalità. All’interno del capitolo conclusivo, invece, vedremo esposti alcuni progetti realizzati tra la primavera del 2023 quella del 2025 che hanno permesso di portare l’esperienza vissuta in amaca in diversi contesti. Allestimenti per festival, installazioni e commissioni private sono il frutto questa ricerca e allo stesso tempo diventa un nuovo materiale di ricerca, di stimolo, di creatività.
