The thesis examines the socio-spatial transformation of one of Milan’s most significant areas today. Porta Nuova re resents one of the most important urban redevelopment projects in Italy. Many questions have been raised about how this transformation reshaped the city’s urban fabric and identity. The research aims to understand and reveal deeper layers of large-scale urban renewal. The thesis engages with the questions of gentrification, displacement, identity, and narratives labeling the area. Milan, with its complex post-industrial history, has evolved into a competitive global city. Tracing its trajectory requires examining the socio-economic forces that have informed its current form. Analyzing Milan through the lens of one of Europe’s global cities reveals numerous discussions about accessibility, spatial organization, and symbolic meaning, which highlight who the city is designed for. There are many contradictions present in the project; the space claims openness but limits spontaneity, and advocates sustainability while celebrating innovation, but silences history. Understanding the tension of the place and engaging with it is possible only through artistic and interdisciplinary methodologies, which introduce site writing and fragments of memory to engage with the space and experience the layers beneath the superficial representation of the project. In particular, the aim is to construct a more embodied narrative that is formed by observation and promenading through the space. The approach enables a more nuanced understanding of the city, revealing the complex narratives of those who inhabit, pass through, or are excluded from these spaces. Finally, the thesis posits that only through creative, critical, and interdisciplinary methods can we uncover the hidden geographies of contemporary cities, where capital, memory, and identity continually redefine themselves.
La tesi esamina la trasformazione socio-spaziale di una delle aree più significative di Milano oggi. Porta Nuova rappresenta uno dei più importanti progetti di riqualificazione urbana in Italia. Molti interrogativi sono stati sollevati su come questa trasformazione abbia rimodellato il tessuto urbano e l’identità della città. La ricerca mira a comprendere e svelare gli strati più profondi del rinnovamento urbano su larga scala. La tesi affronta le questioni della gentrificazione, dello sfollamento, dell’identità e delle narrazioni che etichettano l’area. Milano, con la sua complessa storia postindustriale, si è evoluta in una città globale competitiva. Tracciarne la traiettoria richiede l’esame delle forze socio-economiche che ne hanno plasmato la forma attuale. Analizzare Milano attraverso la lente di una delle città globali d’Europa rivela numerose discussioni su accessibilità, organizzazione spaziale e significato simbolico, che evidenziano per chi è stata progettata la città. Il progetto presenta numerose contraddizioni: lo spazio rivendica l’apertura ma limita la spontaneità, promuove la sostenibilità celebrando l’innovazione, ma silenziando la storia. Comprendere la tensione del luogo e interagire con esso è possibile solo attraverso metodologie artistiche e interdisciplinari, che introducono la scrittura del sito e frammenti di memoria per entrare in contatto con lo spazio e sperimentare gli strati sottostanti la rappresentazione superficiale del progetto. In particolare, l’obiettivo è costruire una narrazione più incarnata, che si forma attraverso l’osservazione e la passeggiata nello spazio. Questo approccio consente una comprensione più sfumata della città, rivelando le complesse narrazioni di coloro che abitano, attraversano o sono esclusi da questi spazi. In definitiva, la tesi postula che solo attraverso metodi creativi, critici e interdisciplinari possiamo scoprire le geografie nascoste delle città contemporanee, dove capitale, memoria e identità si ridefiniscono continuamente.
